1v1 game analysis
I played a 1v1 game yesterday but the other player had to leave before the game was over. I would appreciate it if someone could explain how they thought the game would go and what good moves/mistakes each player made. I'm new to 1v1 and am trying to get better
Thanks

Thoughts on improving Rinascimento
Rinascimento is a horribly unbalanced variant. While I realise it is set in a historical setting and the powers at the time were not of the same strength, it is virtually unplayable for several of the smaller factions.

Not an open tournament, the roster is full and this thread will be for those players to communicate as needed regarding the games (standard restrictions apply regarding discussing ongoing games).
Roster:

Each player plays each nation once. Please join following alphabetical order (Carthage > Egypt > Greece > Persia > Rome > Carthage). For example, if you join game 1 as Greece, then join game 2 as Persia, and so on. Let me know if there are any questions.

Four points for a solo, two for 2-way draw, one for 3-way draw. Games will be two day phases since all five will run at once, but readying quickly is requested when reasonable. 20-point buy-in (100 total), ranked, semi-anon, WTA, hidden draw votes.

I will PM links and passwords next. Thanks for playing, good luck and have fun!

Wait. Won't we then know exactly who is who in each map? Even if I don't know the name of Egypt in 1 game, I know whoever is playing it will then be playing Greece in the next?

There isn't a way for an outside moderator to assign us randomly into each game?

Also, apparently I have missed 35 turns out of over 8000... and so cannot play 5 games at once. I guess I am too unreliable.
That seems a pretty stringent limitation. I'll have to seek a replacement in this case, sorry raapers.

Regarding anonymity, no one's identity will be known until a game ends. By playing all 5 at once, by the time anonymity is lifted all games will be closer to the end than the beginning. It's not perfect, but as close as I can get without having a mod do it -- and even in that case, there would still be a formula involved that could probably be figured out after maybe two games end. I just prefer to keep these things as simple as possible in this kind of small tournament. And again, just as with any inherent variant imbalance, we've all got the same conditions in the 5x5 format which serves to even things out.

If you need a replacement, I'm happy to play! Easily my most favourite variant and I'm normally pretty good at it

It's bedtime for me - just PM me if required.
Thanks Chumbles, but for this one I am sending invites from top rating down. I am still in the 1700s at this point.

There is one discrepancy in the joining order, in game two. It may simply be that raapers2 joined that one. I'll give it a little time before trying to unravel it.

didigoose will join to replace raapers2.

Everyone, please double-check that you have joined each game as the correct nation!
Just FYI - I will likely be without internet for the next 24+ hours, so I will catch up with this and solve any lingering issues when I return. And again, please ensure you've joined games correctly!

Crap. Sorry didigoose. Regarding game 4, yeah there is an issue with how someone(s) joined the games. I've been hoping they would work it out without requiring mod assistance.

tantrumizer, you're not much further down the list. Right now I am waiting to hear back from Devonian, who may take the spot. Stay tuned...
Just to lay out in full how to join each game:

If you join Game 1 as Carthage, join the rest as follows:
Game 2: Egypt
Game 3: Greece
Game 4: Persia
Game 5: Rome

If you join Game 1 as Egypt, join the rest as follows:
Game 2: Greece
Game 3: Persia
Game 4: Rome
Game 5: Carthage

If you join Game 1 as Greece, join the rest as follows:
Game 2: Persia
Game 3: Rome
Game 4: Carthage
Game 5: Egypt

If you join Game 1 as Persia, join the rest as follows:
Game 2: Rome
Game 3: Carthage
Game 4: Egypt
Game 5: Greece

If you join Game 1 as Rome, join the rest as follows:
Game 2: Carthage
Game 3: Egypt
Game 4: Greece
Game 5: Persia

Please make sure you have followed this pattern. If not, please leave the games and rejoin accordingly. Thanks!
Roster is now:

1 for 3-way draw.
Points, as stated in initial post: Four points for a solo, two for 2-way draw, one for 3-way draw.

I will likely start another one of these in a few weeks. Thanks again everyone for playing!

Diplomacy via Whatsapp in German or English
Dear vdip community, a group of players from a German site came up with the idea of creating a gunboat game, exchanging phone numbers and communicate solely via whatsapp. I thought that the idea is pretty cool and would love to try it out.

PSA: Do not create Pick Your Country games with the Choose Your Country option enabled.
There's a bug in the PYC variant that causes it to crash when the game starts if the Choose Your Country option is enabled. Getting the games to cancel after everyone has joined requires banning/unbanning one player in the game, which can cause a lot of issues if that player is in other games, and is a fair amount of work even if they're not.

Until Oli is able to fix the bug (which may be a while), please only use the Random Country Assignment option for PYC.

PBEM NWO Game
Some of you may remember last year's NWO (New-World Order) game that I GM'd. It's a play-by-email game that uses a world map with 40+ nations of varying sizes. It comes complete with wing units, nuclear missiles, and rampant back-stabbing. You can check out last year's game and the rules here: http://www.sendric.com/diplomacy/

If you are interested, you can post here, send me a private message or even email me (sendric [at] gmail [dot] com).
