Feature Request: Friends List
Similar to how the site already has functionality for muting and blocking other players, we should be able to add them to a friends list so that tracking them down to send PMs is more convenient. It would also make hosting games with players you know you enjoy playing with much easier. I don’t believe that this feature is currently in the issue tracker, and it seems like it would be very easy to implement given the current muting and blocking features already in place.

Yet another variant is coming: Manifest Destiny III. It's set in North America during the conquest of the Wild West.

Variant Tournaments
I've really enjoyed playing variant-specific tournaments such as the Known World 15x15 currently underway.

Let me try to sort those issues. As for who got what PMs, that's on me. It's thoroughly confusing keeping straight who is in which, who has had to drop out or changed their minds, etc. It's my own damn fault and I'm not at all surprised I've sent wrong PMs to wrong people. I'm working on that.

The other issue should not be an issue, as it's written in this thread and in the PMs sent with links. When you join the games, you will be randomly joined with nations. DO NOT ENTER MOVES. Captainmeme will shuffle us all into place so that we can guarantee each playing as each nation once. You will be notified in the Global chat of each game when you may enter orders and begin playing.

Thanks again for your patience, I'm trying to get all this pointed in the right direction while dealing with some RL stuff - complicated by a dumping of snow up to my waist - I'm tall. I did not budget for all this shoveling and roof-clearing time.
Another issue I see raised a few posts back is the number of games at a time. 4 for now, with the balance to follow. Feel free to post here or let me know via PM when you are ready to start the others as well. Some players don't mind all games at once, some wish to limit that a bit. Please revisit the early posts of this thread for all that info.

I feel like I'm overly committed in Diplomacy at the moment.
If someone shows up and wants my chair in the rated Sengoku games (8x8) I would gladly leave my spot.
The first 4 games have to start yet.

This is the current players list.

I think I've got a replacement for you DL, I'll see about removing you without penalty and putting in a new player. Stay tuned.

Good to hear that, Shah.
Dr.Rec, let me know how you want to handle the substitution.
Shah, thank you but I've already got someone taking the spot. However, there will be more of these coming up and I'd love to have you playing in them!

On that note Doc, are the lists for participants by series, or will you be accepting sign ups for every series?

If so I would like to participate in every series, so consider me perpetually on all lists for these tourneys.
Sorry for the lack of response, Leif, this slipped through the cracks. Glad to have you fully on board, you'll be on each list. I hope this will be ongoing and evolving over time, so there should be plenty of games!
I would like to start looking at when we can start the balance of games for each tournament. I don't have time over the next couple of days to PM everyone, but if you read this please let me know if you are -- or are not -- willing and able to start the remaining games. I'll take the info that comes in and then PM the players I don't hear from.

It's been fun so far, yes? Sengoku is a beautiful mess.

Sengoku is truly a beautiful mess. Very interesting map.

This is a very humbling experience... hehe I'm at my best when I can talk my way out of a situation... But if you still someone for everyone to beat up on, I'm up for it.
I'd like to wait until one of the unrated Sengoku ends (or maybe two) before starting the next set of three games.

I'm still very much fighting in all 4 (plus the first 4 rated FoW games) and adding 3 more is a bit much.
All noted, thanks for your responses.

Sengoku is a beautiful mess, definitely. Can't work out if the seeming obviousness of how the rotation was applied is an upside or a downside, though.
Yes, but the unrated, at least, is incredible fun.

Sengoku is a "beautiful mess"?!?! LOL Benjamin Hester, the designer, will probably be very amused to hear about that. I am currently having a conversation with him about a variant I am designing. The long, narroe nature of the Japanese islands does present a significant challenge toa variant designer,

P.S. About a thousand years ago, I won what I think was the first public playtest of Sengoku, in the old Cat23 group. It was a very significantly different map. The Power I played isn't even in the variant anymore.
I think the reference was specifically to the 4 (8?) running games right now in the tournament(s). They are playing out very interestingly. But relay to Mr. Hester my appreciation for this variant. It is really cool.

Was referring to the interconnected webs of the 4 games in the rated tourney, specifically, but I think it's liable to end up a glorious mess in any gunboat attempt. Very cramped but still heaps of adjacent centres.

Random aside, I use 'Hester' as a tag for quite a few other games / sites, so seeing it appended with 'Mr.' there was somewhat disconcerting 'til I worked out who you were actually referring to :p
Will do, YouCan'tHandleTheTruth.

Heh, mouse. He calls himself "B." in Dip conversations. When someone calls me "Mr. Cohen", I look around for my father. :^)
El Cremoso (1728 D)
20 Jan 17 UTC
David E Cohen - by "beautiful mess", i didn't mean anything negative! I love the map design, but it is a very unpredictable, albeit well designed, map. i am enjoying every minute, even with my mixed results so far. :)
David, I'd love to hear about the variant you are currently designing.
Hello El Cremoso. Don't say "albeit" B. and I have fairly similar views on variant design, and "unpredictable" is high praise!

Dr. Recommended, I may start a thread on it, or you can PM me your email addy and we can communicate privately. Kaner406 has agreed to help me some with the map, by the way. There are a bunch of special rules, which is not common for me, but necessary for this variant, so it will probably be unable to be coded for this site. But some of my other variants, Spice Islands, East Indies and Western World 901 WOULD work very well on this site (HINT HINT) and Maharajah's is already here. They are all on my web site, http://diplomiscellany.tripod.com/ if you want to look.
Some intriguing variants there, David! Thanks for your efforts.
Each and every one is a labor of love. :^)

Imbalanced map?
It seems as if several maps need some balancing work. For example, England* v Turkey is skewed toward England, and in Rinascimento, the French are virtually at the hands of other players’ wills.

Hello, I have a problem. I am going away for a few days (tomorrow), and I don't know how to quit the game I am in. There are 36 players, so I cannot reasonably ask for all of them to pause --- besides, there isn't enough time --- so I am stuck.

Playing with fewer players
Hi all!

I know this is probably a noob question, but I need to resolve this issue: is it possible to start a game with fewer players than those normally expected? I tried it once with the Rinascimento variant, but the game didn't launch just because there weren't 12 players.
Thank you in advance!

If the "Gunboat", "Public Press", or "Per Rulebook" rules are employed, shouldn't the game be automatically "Anon" as well? If it weren't, then players could just PM each other, defeating the purpose.

Question about social norms for players
In a large game, a reliable player asked the mods to extend the game for Easter. The request was general and largely in the name of other player: "Hey guys, it's Easter, and in a big game, some people will probably be traveling to see family." The extension was granted, and requests like that are likely to be accepted.
