Happy Rome Day
since today (April 21) is Rome's 2770th birthday, I thought it would be nice to fill this thread with stories of the glory of Rome:

Can't stop the Trump
Does anyone here has a clue as to why Donald Trump is boycotting the latest republican debate? Seems to have only downsides and risks without a real gain to me. Enlighten me please.

Seeking replacement for Shift Right variant game
http://vdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=30376#gamePanel

Looking for a replacement for Italy (me). The current position is pretty stable. I'm looking to eliminate all of my press games due to time constraints.

The Original Diplomacy Variant
As many of you know, the Calhamer estate is being liquidated and the very first self-published Diplomacy board sold for just over $5000 last week. Well, something else interesting from the same sale - a bunch of prototype maps, these likely being from several years before the game was published.

Hadn't realized he'd made a Greece variant. Looks different than the other Greece variants I've seen. Really interesting to see works in progress.

Although the things that are attracting the most attention among the Dip community are the original maps for the Classic board (you can see it at various stages of development here), the thing that caught my eye was the final map.

http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/LgQAAOSwol5Y4wyB/s-l1600.jpg

Bear in mind this is probably from at least a year before Diplomacy was published, which means it would definitely bear the title of first ever Variant, except that I don't believe it's ever actually been made or played outside of this prototype - I've seen one similar variant, but it still has very large differences from this map. The prototype doesn't even show power distribution - only supply center ownership.

Given the time this is from, it's not unimaginable that this map was made as an alternative to the Europe one, perhaps for a different number of players. Whatever the case, it brings up some interesting questions for variant enthusiasts, so I'll pose a few of them here:

Do you think this map would play well with the provinces/SCs?
What, and where, do you think the powers should be?

Haha, ninja'd by 4 minutes. I really should write posts up in advance :)

The province:SC ratio is a little low, 1.85 (85/46), kind of a tight map. I'd probably remove several SCs in the clump near Athens.

Maybe aim for 35-38 SCs?

I think I'd aim to get an army into Thasos in the Strymonic Gulf. That way you'd be guaranteed a survive!

Oh wow, a one center stalemate line. That's a pretty massive oversight :D
What in the hell was Mr. C. working at the post office for? He should have had a high paying job somewhere. The man was a genius and he worked at the post office...

Ah well, Einstein worked at the patent office in Bern, but even that wasn't for 30+ years. He was there only until he found a teaching position at a university.
Rather expensive though isn't it?

Yes, this prototype (not a variant!) is very dense. Probably one of the reasons Mr. Calhamer made the changes he did. Increased density, independent of other things, leads to an inceased likelihood of stalemate line formation and diplomatic/tactical inflexibility.

Very interesting. Regarding Thasos on the Greece prototype, judging from this version, I'm sure it's just a rough idea of where he was thinking he'd like some centers and that he would refine as he developed the powers. I have a very early stage but abandoned Ancient Greece variant I was working on, and was trying to put 10 powers in roughly the same area. I had Sparta, Athenae, Knossos, Rhodos, Miletus, Troia, Byzantium, Pella, Larissa, and Ambracia. Basically five powers encircling southern Greece, and five powers encircling northern Greece, but many of the territories are similar to the ones here, so it looks somewhat similar. Thanks for sharing.
Hello Mitomon. I lurk on a significant number of sites.

What other sites?
Well, if you REALLY care, LOL, the number has gone down in recent years, as several once prominent groups have become moribund, but in addition to VDiplomacy and WebDiplomacy, there is Play Diplomacy Online and Diplomatic Corp. I also occasionally look in on and comment in non-English language groups, though the only other language I can barely get by in is German. Google translate is very helpful for everything else. My "home group" is the Academy of Creative Destruction, which is an invitation-only forum which had its genesis as a couple of elite subgroups (elite as in very reliable and skilled players only) of the now defunct Cat23 forum, which was once one of the largest, if not the largest, internet diplomacy forum. The ACD is primarily an email-based group, rather than web-based, and games are almost all hand-adjudicated, though some GMs do use software aids.

Minor map issues
Is anybody able to make minor cosmetic map changes to the variants, for readability? There's two small things I've noticed:

* Imperial Diplomacy II: there's a connection between Morocco and W. Med, but the map really doesn't show it.
* First Crusade: The Sardinia supply centre in the large map is placed in an odd, almost invisible spot.
