Question Regarding CDs
I've noticed that when I click the profiles of people who CD in games, it sometimes still shows 0 CDs on their record. Any reason for it not showing up? Seems to semi-absolve people of CDs?

These Diplomacy variants look beautiful and I have wanted to play them for years. Is anybody here working on bringing them to vDip?

New Thread Idea
Does anyone know Polish History? Did The Deluge cause such material damage that it doomed Poland to economic and political death spiral, did it devastate the proto-bourgeois, densely populated Northwest at a key moment within a republic when it was fighting with the rural, agrarian South and East thus stunting an incipient movement towards urbanization and development or did it not really have any long term effect?

Scramble for Africa Variant - Gauging Interest
I was wondering how interested people would be in a Scramble for Africa variant. I'm already making one for my friends and me to use, so I could easily put it on the lab for testing once it's done.

Where do you post your variant map ideas?
Working on the Calhamer Prototype variant and interested in getting opinions on map design to keep it authenticate. In some cases the maps aren't clear and I'm interested in advice. Where's the best spot folks have found for posting?

Bourse development and discussion thread.
This summer, I plan to develop Phase I of four phases in a Bourse gaming system to expand the gaming experience without over taxing the game director. This thread is to discuss the phases and how the various features should be implemented.
Here are my initial thoughts for the four phases (Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring - I hope).

Phase 1:
- Gamedirector Access Only
- Purchases and sales must balance.
. . . Purchases or sales orders can specify complete only or partial fulfillment.
. . . Option to "max" buy will grab as much as is available of the sale blocks in order of submission.
. . . . . . This is a rethink just now of what I posted on the game. Just like a live market, the first sell gets considered first. The first buy gets considered first. Get your orders in early for the best chance!

- Prices adjust based on supply and demand (supply exceeds demand or vise versa, adjust by $.01 per 100 shares difference not sold/bought)

- Allow unlimited investors (allowing investing to be more true to form)

- Auto resolution of everything for the Gamedirector with a public page for viewing results historically (show all results for any phase or country plus current standings based on VPs and net worth - two different standings)

- Option to release additional "bonds" each phase per nation (will be a simple numeric of 0 to N per phase)

- Option to fix the maximum sell or allow oversells with immediate notification via email to all investors (much like an "intent to sell" filing in the real world). Keep it under the limit, it's private until it happens. Buy orders will always be private until they happen.

Phase 2:
- Individual investor access to enter/modify current orders. Game is tied to site via directors account to lock changes and prevent orders being entered between resolution of movements and resolution of Bourse orders.

- Buy and sell bidding. Matchmaking for buy and sell bids to get the best value for those willing to sell low or buy high (seller willing to sell for the least amount gets matched to buyer willing to buy for the greatest amount with transaction price the average of the asking and offer prices becoming the new price for the next transaction match). The system matches offers to sell lower than offers to buy and continues matchmaking until all buy or sell offers are done or no more sell offers with a price lower than the remaining buy offers. Price is just an indicator of where the last transaction occurs. This will be the bulk of Phase 2's efforts.

Phase 3:
- Limit orders with and without expiration.

- Stock shorting (with expiration configurable on number of phases by gamedirector). If your short expires and you haven't bought enough shares back to cover it, you are forced to liquidate stocks until the short fall is covered or you are bankrupt. Stocks of least total value will attempt to be sold at "1 cent" offer until it no longer matches, then next total value on up until shortfall is covered or no more matches can be made. Investor is banned from trading anything until shortfall is covered then account is flagged for denial in shorting stocks. If selling everything leaves you with no cash, you are bankrupt. Just like in real life, there is risk to shorting. Shorting has same maximums as selling and no "intent to sell" announcement option. Max is a hard max in shorting.

Phase 4:
- Live markets... Market is open while movement orders are in play and closes for adjustment phases.
One note: Players should never "ready up" on the movement phase and, upon completion and implementation of phase 2, players must agree to "ready up" (unless they give the gamedirector a good reason not to) any retreat and adjustment phases.
Oh, all investors should have the ability to communicate with all other investors. For phase I, the gamedirector can share the userID or email as requested by each investor. Part of phase 2's investor access will be a communication system that allows sending a message to one or more investors and will also include the notifications for "intent to sell" (with optional email notification if the investor desires when a new message comes into their account).

Complex... but I like it.

I appreciate the thought and effort put into this. Yet I lean with those who feel it is overly complex. And the trouble I see in exploring this further right now is that we are struggling to get people that can comprehend the rather basic bourse rules in play right now.

I love it - as long as enough people understand to play it, it sounds great
The key will be to make the first round simple from the investor perspective, The behind the scenes machinations don't have to be understood to play. Just the simple "first in wins" and the basic "only buy or sell the full amount or allow partial fulfillment of my order". If they can't grasp that, then they have no business playing the stock market.

When future phases come around, then it will be an educational experience for them. Maybe some will even learn enough to consider trying their hand at real investing on a small scale.

Couple of Q's

1) Phases - Phase 1 corresponds to Spring, Phase 2 Spring retreats, Phase 3 Autumn, Phase 4 Autumn retreats/builds?

2) Starting amount of stock. How does this work? will there be a way to generate new stock? or is the system closed depending on the amount of players involved?

3) What happens if no-one is selling stock?

4) VPs are (in the bourse) calculated on a ration between SCs and amount of stock held. Will this be a similar algorithm or will it need tweaking in regards to Q2?

Answers

1) Do I really need to answer this? I'm talking real life seasons. E.g. I will develop phase 1 over the sumemr of 2017. Phase 2 over the fall of 17 (if Phase 1 is clean and we are happy with it). Phase 3 over the Winter of 17/18. And Phase 4 over the Spring of 18. Of course it all slides if issues occur or I get busy on the job and lose my evening time.

2) I envision options for starting and for injecting more. New investors will be given a configurable amount of money. The nations will start with a configurable amount of available stock at a configured price. And a configurable amount of stock will be released each trading season (i.e. each movement phase).

3) If no one is selling, the only stock available for purchase is what gets released each movement phase (the nation makes bond purchases available for sales like savings bonds). Likewise, if no one is buying, there will be no transactions and you can't sell it. No different than the current stock market. When a nation is eliminated, the stock becomes worthless and can no longer be traded. Accounts with the stock will still reflect their shares, just with a zero value.

4) I think for phase 1 of development, the current VP system will suffice. It works well because investors don't have to command a nation from the start. You could play a classic game with hundreds of investors.

As it stands, the only scenario I see this not working for is Fog of War because the system, once connected to VDip, won't be able to see what nations have how many SCs. But even that could still work. There just wouldn't be a known winner of the Bourse VPs until the game ended. Fog still shows eliminated nations as eliminated so the system could recognize that and stop trading on those shares.

Diplomacy: Is Germany Too Weak?
I noticed that Germany is considerably weaker in Diplomacy than it's historical counterpart. In game, Germany can very easily be knocked out by England and France. However, historically Germany was able to fight competently on three separate fronts. Does anybody feel that Germany is a little misrepresented in game?
More importantly, are there any variants that address this?

Feedback for 1v1 Cold War on WWIV map
Hi folks, some of you may have heard me talk on the podcast about bringing the WWIV map to a Cold War circa 1984 1v1 variant. Interested in your thoughts about whether I use the standard WWIV map, the v6.2 version (is there any actual difference in the map itself?) or whether the sealane version would be better. Thoughts?
