Anyone else have hobbies outside of Diplomacy or gaming in general?
I am into model railroading as well as fine scale modeling (military), and balsa & tissue aircraft building. What are you all into?

Really enjoying this thread, +1 YCHTT. Jamie T, Mr. Fink, tell me about the music you play. What do you sing, nopunin10did?

My hobbies are mainly reading and video games, though during the summer I am a (very) amateur blacksmith. Also I enjoy plastic modelling and tabletop war games. When I get time, that is.
baky123 - move to Austin so I have one more wargamer to play with :-) can never get the heavier ones on to the table with my regular gaming crowd, lucky to have 1775: Rebellion or Quartermaster General see the light of day. A&A, Britannia, etc. are usually out of the question with them.

Strategy board games (likewise prefer the euro side of the genre but don't mind some of the ameritrash)
Wargames (A World at War, Squad Leader, likewise have trouble finding people who want to play a game over the course of several months, would love to play Britannia some day)
Computer games (almost exclusively Civ 5 when I get a chance, but I have been known in the past to frequent middle earth in Lord of the Rings Online). The other online game I am active in is a space strategy game known as warring factions.

On the active side I like swimming, hiking, cycling, and racket sports, particularly table tennis. I used to love basketball, but my body can't take the pounding anymore or keep up with all these young guys.

I enjoy reading (mostly in audio formats these days), particularly in the 1700-1800 historical military fiction genre and the fantasy genre (Wheel of Time, Sword of Shannara, and of course everything Tolkien ever wrote. Last I checked I am only two volumes short of owning everything he ever penned that is available.) The Ender's game series which I loved has opened an interest in science fiction, but I find I like less of that genre than I thought I would because Ender's game seems to be rather unique.

To round out the list I do my own yard work and rob the gym of membership fees, I tinker with robots and electronics (I have a CNC milling machine and am working to build a 3D printer, and am working out designs for a custom built quad copter), I play bass guitar and piano, and am just getting started with photography.

None of these hobbies gets very much attention lately though with work as busy as it is. And with so many, I find myself sequencing through them. Diplomacy's 5-10 minutes a day seems to have been the right mix to stick with it for years.

I'm a baritone in a local civic chorale, and we're the "house choir" for the state symphony. We do choral pieces and masterworks that range from baroque to contemporary, singing in English, Latin, French, German, Russian, and sometimes even Hebrew.
Hey, Leif! I'm 18th/19th century military fiction audiophile as well! I've been listening to the Ramage, Kydd, Hornblower, and Sharpe series, rotating through so I don't get burned out on one character. I intersperse them with classics like the d'Artagnan romances, Dickens, and usually one or two horror (or hard scifi with horrorish themes) classics at Halloween. It'll be time to read a new classic when I finish this Kydd novel.

I listen on the daily commute to and from work and cardiac rehab.

Last year was 1984 (you gotta admit that the dystopian future of Orwell is a horror :) ). The previous year was Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus and Dracula. always unabridged. I'll probably do Edgar Alan Poe this year. I have a complete set of his stories and novels and it's been a while since I listened or read Fall of the House of Usher or Cask of Amontillado.

Christmas sees my only abridged novel as I always listen to Patrick Stewart's reading of A Christmas Carol. But that takes about 2 hours, so two days commute, then I switch to Christmas music I like (not the crap at the mall that has already started).

I also enjoy the mysteries of Brother Cadfael and occasionally drop in a Sherlock Holmes novel or volume of stories (the standard 5 volumes).

If you want some fun gaming that doesn't involve having to gather a crew, Dan Versen Games (and others) make some great war games for solo play. His games are reminiscent of the war games from AH like Panzer Blitz.

@Dr Recommended: I play the bass in what I'd describe as a New York punk rock band. Its just for fun, covers mostly. Stuff like The Stooges, the Dictators, the Flaming Groovies, Talking Heads, Television.
Four guys in a band are hanging out. Three are musicians with their groupies. The fourth is the bass player.

@YCHTT definitely a fan of the Sharpe and Hornblower series, I'll have to look into Kydd and Ramage. My 18th-19th century military fiction interest is recent so I am still discovering much. Lately I've been working through the Aubrey/Maturin series, but I denifintely work in some breaks in that one. I would like to do more classics, but I have a harder time getting into those on my commute. The latest classics I've done were Les Miserables and a couple Dostoyevsky and Tolstoy classics, the Brothers Karamozov and Anna Karenina. Definitely preferred Dostoyevsky on my commutes over Tolstoy, and I preferred both Russians, or rather their translations, to Hugo.

I only ever played Panzer Blitz once (or rather halfway through once) but I own it and several other AH games that I would love to find an opponent and enough consecutive hours to play them all. I will definitely check out Dan Versen Games. (You mention others, feel free to shoot me a PM or post here).
Oh, and the Aubrey/Maturin novels are excellent too. Two of them were the basis for Master and Commander: Far Side of the World. "Read" them all in audiobook form and collecting the hardcovers for the real book library.

Is England* vs Turkey truly balanced?
The stats spread on England* vs Turkey is innocuous enough. England* wins 55% of games which do not end in a draw, Turkey wins 45%. England is favored, but not to the extent that Turkey can't win; the game is not balanced, but it also isn't drastically skewed either way.

However, I have recently encountered an opening from England that I'm struggling to counter as Turkey.

Force drawn games
Games with fixed end year are (for ranking purposes) treated like solo victories for the power with the largest SC tally (even when PPSC scoring is used). Is that intentional? Not that I think it matters much to me, but I do find it rather odd, it would seem like the more logical approach would be that they are treated as force drawn, or possibly use affect ranking differently depending on scoring system used.

To Everyone in Furnace of Affliction
I'm really sorry, as I was trying to fix the Indonesia Build bug the game sent everyone into CD and cancelled itself. This was because I forgot about another bug - if you enter all holds, it counts as an NMR even if saved, so when I tried to advance the game 2 phases it assumed everyone had NMR'd twice (even though I'd set hold orders for everyone).
