Is England* vs Turkey truly balanced?
The stats spread on England* vs Turkey is innocuous enough. England* wins 55% of games which do not end in a draw, Turkey wins 45%. England is favored, but not to the extent that Turkey can't win; the game is not balanced, but it also isn't drastically skewed either way.

However, I have recently encountered an opening from England that I'm struggling to counter as Turkey.

Force drawn games
Games with fixed end year are (for ranking purposes) treated like solo victories for the power with the largest SC tally (even when PPSC scoring is used). Is that intentional? Not that I think it matters much to me, but I do find it rather odd, it would seem like the more logical approach would be that they are treated as force drawn, or possibly use affect ranking differently depending on scoring system used.

Update regarding vPoints/Rankings

Hi all,

Due to the number of games that this site has hosted (as well as several cancelled games) the database has gotten rather creaky, and the original algorithm that was designed to work for keeping the vRanking system working was getting overloaded. As a number of players noted, ranking and vPoints were starting to get a little bit inaccurate.

Because of this we have had to reset the rating system, and everyone's ratings are now based on games ending after 1.1.16.

Yikes! I lost a lot of points.

But I think it's probably a good idea to rank us on our more recent games anyway.
CCR (1957 D)

I understand this should be a temporary solution. The algorithm should be changed a bit. Instead of recalculating everything, the data could be consolidated after the end of every year, then the algorythm only calculate the latest games, but the rankings become permanent,
The ELO rankings are based on the chess rankings. This system is not intended to record recent games only. In its spirit is looking for the "real ranking" for each player, and alll the games should count. Thus the proposal:if the ratings of every player could be consolidated every year (a new "starting" value for each player, instead of 1000 for everyone), then wouldnt the algroythm be underloaded?

Bear in mind that this change applies to everyone, not just you, so losing a large amount of points won't necessarily equate to a big drop in your ranking. Additionally, a number of players who had top spots but left the site (Cypeg is an example) have dropped out of the top 100 as a result, leaving it more open to active players.
bluecthulhu (1815 D)

Captainmeme - This was supposed to be a lifetime ranking. There are plenty of players with a longterm outlook who take a break and then come back. I had been working for years on my ranking only to see it get destroyed. I am not going to throw a tantrum or anything like that but this one move sucked away some of my competitive drive on this website unfortunately.
WTF? I've dropped from 30 something to 50 in the HOF. Screw this, I'm not buying Kaner any more drinks in the pub ever again.

(tongue in cheek)

Cpt. Meme argues that 1500v used to put you in top100, now if you're 1500v+ then you're top20. But it makes no sense keeping an ELO-based ranking for recent results only!

I say it again: it seems easy to fix. If the ratings data were consolidated after the end of every year (a new "starting" value for each existing player), then the algorythm only calculate from the latest games, but the ratings become permanent.

I think both are interesting numbers actually ...
- a lifetime ELO rating like it used to be (that needs some event or timer based additive calculation though for long term, as found out).
- a "the last x year(s)" ranking that honours currently strong players ... (that would mean a constant re-calculation thought that could cause server load too, so maybe it could be a monthly updated statistic or so?)

transforming the ELO ranking directly to a cut-the-past-off ranking of course will cause frustration from a play theory perspective ... rewards taken away never feel good, even with good reason.

Knowing the complexity of such databases and scripts, we all should understand this takes some time though to fix.

@Oli if you'll lean into coding, then why not take a closer look to this proposal:
The vranking regarding Replacement Policy should be improved; specially benefic to the whole community as general stimulous for replacing condemned powers.
The simple rule "in the case of a replacement player, he would NOT lower his rating based on that game -- it would remain unchanged."
Under the current system, good players who praise the ranking do not take over CD'ed powers, even with good sc count, if that power is in a bad tactical/diplomatic position!

Oli, why not just start over from scratch? This Matthew cat at the is never going to play again. He's going to rest on the one dubiously freakish 1,200 point win he got. No one will ever surpass that. The Elo ratings need a serious overhaul. Why not take a look at this and reset them from the beginning?
Devonian (1887 D)

CCR, There are no condemned powers, only powers in very weak positions.

That being said, powers in very weak positions, have a very low expectation and are penalized less than a power that is in a strong position.

see page 2 of this thread, near the bottom where oli explains it:

Devonian, somoene with 2000v pts would not join as replacement to get a 3-way dray, it would even worse their ratings, if among average players, or even a 4-way ina well rated game. And yes most CD's are condemned powers. I use to take over on webdip m and here too, and most times for elimination.

I have read through that thread and I found out that the replacement policy could be developed

LogicCure asked about the replacement policy (post on 26 Feb 2015)
I read it through, specially Oli's 2nd reply to this, the post starting with "The takeover is rated depending on..."
I believe the vranking regarding Replacement Policy should be improved.

Some people have mentioned the virtues of having a "recent-only ELO". Of course this would be disappointing to some. Maybe there needs to be an "all-time" list *and* a "recent" list? Always displayed side by side.

But maybe even better than a "recent" cutoff would be rating decay, as used in the Glicko system, which was developed as a replacement for Elo and addresses some of its supposed deficiencies. More about that here: https://www.chess.com/blog/kurtgodden/elo-to-glicko-your-rating-explained

Whilst I am probably one of the few players to see his vranking increase again (as I was one of the 'victims' of the bug that occurred a few weeks ago) and I am glad to be back in the hall of fame, I actually would like for at least the all time ranking to be back into place again. I am most certainly for my #20 position in this new hall of fame, but it most certainly does not reflect the great quality and skill of some players that have been around for a much longer time. They are much more interesting opponents for me than I am for them ;-)

In any case a thank you for trying to fix the vranking problem that has been around for a while now.

One question remains for me: Even though the ranking system has been updated to games 01-01-2016 and after, there is still one game i've played that seems to be extremely bugged regarding ranking:

http://vdiplomacy.com/hof.php?gameID=31368

I solo'd this Rinascimento game but got zero vranking points for the game. Neither did the losing and surviving players see a decrease in their ranking. Whilst revamping the ranking system in general is top priority, I hope that perhaps at some point this game specifically can also looked at.
Devonian (1887 D)

CCR,

If a 2000v pts player ends in a 3 way draw, it would have been better for him if he entered as a replacement with a weak position than to start at the beginning. The vdip rating accounts for the poor starting position.

As far as takeovers being condemned, I agree that they are more likely to lose, but they are not condemned. I have come back from taking over 1 and 2 sc's to participating in a draw.

Besides, do you really think we have a problem with games that have been abandoned and not taken over. There are very few games available to be taken over. (only 1 game as of this writing) Our Reliability Rating corrects that problem; which is the more appropriate way to deal with it. If we give incentives on a "skill" rating, the skill rating of the player might be inappropriately manipulated.

Oli, I know there was some variability in NMR/CD that players were tagged with, and there was a similar issue recently with a Greek game. For example, I have 1 CD and 3 or 4 NMRs on my record that are not real. In order to spare you being deluged with messages from 50 players seeking correction, what's the best way for affected players to handle this?

First I will try to code something to fix this, than the mods will need to handle this... :-)
So be patient. I'm working on it, but it will take some time. I do no longer have much spare time with my brain working for such complicated things... :-) Family takes the best time of me, everybody else needs to be patient.. :-)
No worries Oli, thanks very much for addressing it.

I'm really sorry, as I was trying to fix the Indonesia Build bug the game sent everyone into CD and cancelled itself. This was because I forgot about another bug - if you enter all holds, it counts as an NMR even if saved, so when I tried to advance the game 2 phases it assumed everyone had NMR'd twice (even though I'd set hold orders for everyone).
