I can't figure out why I'm terrible at two-player variants but I'm fairly good at 7+ player games. In the meantime, I'll keep trying more duels and losing...

When you practice a lot a game you get some "reflexes". The 7-player game even in gunboat requires other ones than the 1v1. That's all. That does not mean much...
1v1 is much more analytical and to try to guess what the other will play to counter this. Particularly on this map.
nb: I have played several hundreds 1v1 on webdiplomacy.net. This map can be found only here...
