23 Sep 21 UTC 7 October 1571, the start of the battle: Hello Caustic. Have you ever played this variant?
23 Sep 21 UTC 7 October 1571, the start of the battle: I have. Have you?
23 Sep 21 UTC 7 October 1571, half an hour after the start of the battle: Yeah, two I think, I still have no idea on what a good strategy is.
23 Sep 21 UTC 7 October 1571, half an hour after the start of the battle: Me neither actually so its even
24 Sep 21 UTC 7 October 1571, 1 hour and a half after the start of the battle: aww shit
24 Sep 21 UTC 7 October 1571, 1 hour and a half after the start of the battle: pardon my language
25 Sep 21 UTC 7 October 1571, 2 hours and a half after the start of the battle: I feel that none of the 1v1 variants are as good as they could be. Like they r missing something
25 Sep 21 UTC 7 October 1571, 2 hours and a half after the start of the battle: Playing 1v1 maps totally lacks the diplomacy element obviously. Also it's hard to design a map that is balanced and doesn't lead to just guessing games. My favourite 1v1 maps are the American Secession war and Cold War.
25 Sep 21 UTC 7 October 1571, 3 hours and a half after the start of the battle: There isnt many choices for 1v1 sadly. (That may be the issue) those are my favorites to. The IvG and FvA are ok to when its 21 or more SCs to win. Cold war is the only one that someone kind of thought about before making.... I mean with all the different additional rules that weve added to various maps. Nobody has came up with anything thats interesting???!!!!
25 Sep 21 UTC 7 October 1571, 3 hours and a half after the start of the battle: Seams like a job for me....... Cmon mind, think of something.....
25 Sep 21 UTC 7 October 1571, 3 hours and a half after the start of the battle: Maybe I could even do that as a Bachelor thesis, but it's a silly idea. What would a good 1v1 map have to fullfill? I think it should be balanced but at best not symmetrical. (There is this Duo map which is rather annoying). Also it should be designed in such a way that there are no good luck guesses in year 1.
26 Sep 21 UTC 7 October 1571, 3 hours and a half after the start of the battle: You'll win this one. I still don't know if it's a good strategy to keep both frigates in the beginning.
26 Sep 21 UTC 7 October 1571, 4 hours after the start of the battle: I forgot about Duo. Im not a fan of that one either. The flow of the tiles makes the mid game a drag.
Iv got a few ideas on scenarios to do. A few ideas on various game mechanics that would be interesting to add to 1v1 maps but the 2 most important things are going to be the hardest to get in harmony, balance and flow.
Something i think is missing from the 1v1s is options. Metagame data shows the % success rate of opening moves and the highest % is played offten in a tournament setting. A map designed with = %sucess opening moves would create "options".
..... That might be exactly what you were just saying with the no lucky guesses :D
26 Sep 21 UTC 7 October 1571, 4 hours after the start of the battle: Yes, that would be good, but it should be in such a way, that there is no minimax start. Cold War has baisically two decisions that have to be made: Nato can decide to go to Norwegian sea to attack Leningrad (and then decide to attack it or move further) and whether to go to Japan or India. The USSR can decide whether to go for India or Saigon. The Leningrad opening however opens a guessing game and a wrong guess has bad consequences.

The American Secession War has several possible openings, however the ones that guarantee three centers are better than others.
26 Sep 21 UTC 7 October 1571, 4 hours and a half after the start of the battle: You'll win this game. It's a weird variant, not that cool.
28 Sep 21 UTC 7 October 1571, 4 hours and a half after the start of the battle: Whoops. Glad u didnt go for my flagships
28 Sep 21 UTC 7 October 1571, 4 hours and a half after the start of the battle: Oh shit
28 Sep 21 UTC 7 October 1571, 5 hours after the start of the battle: I would think a variant made with the starting SCs more than a tile away would help keep all openings closer to equally successful
28 Sep 21 UTC 7 October 1571, 5 hours after the start of the battle: I would think a variant made with the starting SCs more than a tile away would help keep all openings closer to equally successful
04 Oct 21 UTC I was just continuing the game in case you'll forget to do a move. It turned out to be worth it.
