Convoys with +2 strength variant?
Would a Classic variant with this change (i.e. armies convoyed to a place bringing an attack power of 2 units) be interesting? A convoy involving more than one ship wouldn't have the attack power stack, by the way. If a variant already exists with this property, what is it?

How'd we do challenge ranges in a pyramid? Everyone same rank or the rank above? Would want a more finely tuned result than simply 'swap positions' I'd think (4th dropping to 10th, or 7th to 15th seems a little excessive to me for one loss).
Maybe can only challenge the tier above if you're in first position of your tier, but you can always challenge the last person in the tier above? Essentially 'only challenge within tiers' but the first and last slots of adjacent tiers count as both?
Mittag (1396 D)
23 Jun 18 UTC
@Sky_hopper: exactly, there's as many people on each tier as the number of the tier.

@mouse: Usually, you can challenge every person on the tier above you, and every person before you on the same tier. Usually, you swap places in the case that the challenger wins. (I say "usually" because that is the standard format of a ladder tournament.) You could modify it so that if you are promoted one level you always enter at the bottom of that level, and vice versa for demotions.
Mittag (1396 D)
23 Jun 18 UTC
(+1)
The problem with the current format is that there aren't enough players who you are allowed to challenge. There's not enough movement at the bottom of the ladder. Seriously, I have not yet lost a game in this tournament, but even if I would keep my perfect score it would take me 2--3 years to reach the top of the ladder at the current pace.

You could also introduce a rule that says that everyone is always allowed to challenge the next available player, no matter the difference in ranks, and swap places if the challenger wins of course.

Even after Mittag v Unstupid finishes (with Mittag victorious), I'll still have to wait 7 more days. (Rule 4)
Sky_Hopper (365 D)
24 Jun 18 UTC
I think the first step would be to reduce the 7 day grace to 3, or possibly even 0, unless a person *specifically* needs a break.
Mittag (1396 D)
25 Jun 18 UTC
4 days or 7 days doesn't make such a big difference. Not being allowed to challenge anyone for 6 weeks because the two players in front of you are playing each other does.
mouse (1825 D)
25 Jun 18 UTC
I'd be fine with cutting the 7 day 'recovery' from challenges should the person in question post in thread that they're fine to take one. The main reason it's there (as I understand things) is to allow the person who did not post the results of the challenge to issue one of their own before being jumped on again.
It's not necessary as a 'break' given there is already a possible 14 days given to anyone challenged before they have to accept.

...actually I just went and checked the rules, and by my understanding it's a moot point anyway - it's not a required wait period, it's simply "they're allowed to say no", similarly to if the challenger wishes to select the map. Note that 'allowed to' in no way means 'must'; if the challenged person does not have a pressing challenge of their own then I can't see why most wouldn't accept anyway.
mouse (1825 D)
25 Jun 18 UTC
I do agree with Mittag that being unable to challenge anyone within the bounds of the tourney for an extended period can be frustrating, though.

I'd be happy to take a friendly, if anyone's interested and otherwise bored. Just send via PM, same basic rules as the tourney.

also, to respond to Sky Hopper's query from the beginning of the page, this is one of the reason to allow challenging down - helping to cull the list of inactives (or scoring a game, if they're less inactive than they seem :p )

Sheer coolness of doing such a thing

Stuff happens in life and people occasionally need help from Mods to exit games without destroying the games for other players. Players who need Mods to remove them and delay games should provide a list of all of their games to the Mods. This is common courtesy.
