A new Cold War tournament (Nexus CW6)
Hey everybody. It was about time someone organised another cross platform Cold War tournament.

The tournament will be played wherever the players agree to play. Which means vDip will be hosting games. I have made a rule set on discord: https://discord.gg/kKnAuHN6kM - if you do not like discord I will communicate via e-mail. I will post updates here.

Great new variant - Bronze Age Diplomacy
IMHO a really great new variant with many options, constantly fluctuating balances of power, both fleets and armies with power, sensible offboard movement that makes stalemates hard.

This is a good one I think

New podcast for online Dip games
Hi everyone

Kaner and I have started a podcast about playing Diplomacy online....

Cool, thanks for clearing that up Technostar.
Hi folks. Episode 26 of the Diplomacy Games podcast is now live on iTunes, Stitcher and at DiplomacyGames.com

Apologies on the gap between episodes. Kaner and I recorded this 2 weeks ago but I've been having problems with my computer bloating which made it hard to have the necessary space for editing and exporting the files. But its done now so enjoy!

We talk about the Android app Conspiracy (pretty much Diplomacy), variants in development and summer in Australia.

Remember to give it 5 stars in iTunes (https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/diplomacy-games/id1148827717) or Stitcher (https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/diplomacy-games) to get the word about Diplomacy!
Your computer was PMSing?
Hi folks, the second bit of the podcast was recorded in a spot we thought would be quieter.... and it was except the audio is worse! Apologies in advance and you'll really need to bump up the volume. As this is becoming an issue of late we may have to fork out some cash for a couple of mikes.

An update on Divided States:
I have run a few test games on my local server through the first few turns. I decided against convoyable islands because sealanes provide alternate routes, though all the other rules are all in place. There are currently two bugs that I could not work out on my own (Colored neutral centers causing some coloring errors and neutral standing armies rebuilding even when their host territories are occupied). I sent the map to Oli on Sunday to see if he could fix the bugs, though I have not yet heard back from him. I'll take another stab at bug fixing this weekend when I'm less busy.

Despite those two bugs, the map's in the last stages of development and probably needs just a few more hours' work before it is available to play.

Regarding the Panama Canal and Northwest Passage, they are deliberately intended to be hotly contested, particularly the Canal, but tricky to stalemate at the same time. From the one test game that I ran farther than a few years, it seems likely that the Canal will fulfill that role well.

This is too good to believe.
Thanks for the update Technostar - fantastic news!

And appreciate your comments jason. We'll just have to ask the wallabies in the background to stop their incessant tick-tick-tick-ticking. As long as kaner and I don't head off to the racetrack for an episode we'll be right https://youtu.be/ATCcHekV3ZY?t=1m17s
Alright Amby, PM me. Where do I send my donation? Bohemian Rhapsody, I can’t wait!

Yay! New episode uploaded.

Better yet its 100% Divided States and includes an interview with its creator Technostar. Double Yay!

The internet will slowly start sending it out to subscribers on iTunes, Stitcher etc. Find it there or DiplomacyGames.com.

And based on Doc's suggestion we now have a Patreon page so if you are inclined you can donate to the show to:

a) Improve the audio equipment (less background noise) or
b) Buy drinks (more drunk Aussies)

And of course you can still keep doing c) get it all for free.

Visit https://www.patreon.com/DiplomacyGames to contribute to the show. But in the meantime, enjoy! (and relish Amby lamenting his poor start to his Divided States game)

Enjoyable podcasts, great job guys! Was also quite nice to get a bit more background on the Divided States variant through the interview with Techno.

There might be time constraints on your part, but I would actually be quite excited about perhaps having podcasts on the United States of Insanity game specifically. There's simply so much going on there ;-)

Thank you once again for having me on the podcast! It was a great experience for me, although it was nerve-wracking as a first time interview.

It's also interesting to see how the games I'm in have evolved since then - for instance, I'm getting absolutely hammered in United States of Insanity!

As for the Bourse, I am still very eager to get one going on WW4 Sealanes, although a smaller map is fine if we can't get enough players.

Pretty sure we'll have to do Divided States Bourse now, no? It'd only take 12 years, no big deal.

Dr. Recommended,

I do actually have a Bourseian idea related to the Diplomacy Games Podcast.

The idea is you would bid a certain amount of dollars per month to Amby's "Petron (tequila?) Fund" or Patreon Fund, requesting the song you want.

I, in turn, try to outbid you each month so that there will be NO SINGING by the dynamic duo -- doing all of us on vDip, and the Universe a huge favor.

Winner gets his choice. Amby and Kaner keep all the money for drinks or decent mics. Everybody wins!
jason4747 (1633 D)
12 Mar 18 UTC
To be fair, I cannot sing at all. I applaud those that can. ;-)

I cannot afford the amounts I'd be otherwise willing to pay!
Oh dear, I can see Mrs Kaner & Mrs Amby being not too pleased after an overly boozy singing/no singing show!
Episode 28 is now live and aptly titled "Drinking, Diplomacy and Shit Cake."

As Dr Recommended hasn't donated there is no singing this episode. That said a big shout out to Jason4747 who is our first Patreon supporter, getting behind the show to improve the audio quality.... or it is getting us more drunk?

I did have a play with the audio settings for this. I managed to boost the sound levels but it sounded a little tinny. That said we haven't got proper mikes yet.

So grab it from iTunes, Sticher & DiplomacyGames.com. We spend a fair amount of time talking the new Bourse game, test games at the Lab & Conspiracy. Plus I give Kaner a history lesson or two, have my best wine ever and we talk about shit cake.

2+ hours of games, variants and slurring is now live in the latest podcast episode. Kaner & I discuss our games, the massive volume of variants coming from "The Machine" Enriador, my thoughts on future variants and lots lots more.

As always grab it at DiplomacyGames.com, iTunes, Stitcher or whatever you use for podcasts.

@Amby

I really enjoyed the episode (as always). Just to adress a couple of things you and Kaner talked about 'Renaissance: 1453':

1) There is no 'Russia' in 1453, despite using the same color. That purple power is called "Poland-Lithuania", who did rule over Diplomacy's Warsaw and Sevastopol, as well as having St. Petersburg (the republic of Novgorod) as a client-State.

2) You were very correct about some breaks in the convention of only home centers getting the names of cities. I followed Cuffaro's and Ratcliffe's original design choices most of the way, the exception being Sevastopol (which didn't even exist in 1453). On retrospect I could have changed those too.

3) Constantinople (and the entire Byzantine Empire) was captured in 1453 itself. Ironic, I know.
Hi folks - new episode is live where Kaner & I interview Kestas, the creator of the original code used here at vDip, webDip and the original version of PlayDip.

We also talk Bourse and go off on the odd tangent or two. Grab it at iTunes, Stitcher or DiplomacyGames.com

cool - I really enjoyed recording this interview :)
A very boozy episode 31 is now live folks. Sure it was recorded 5 weeks ago and all the games discussed are out of date. But still a bit of fun. Usual spots: iTunes, Stitcher and DiplomacyGames.com
Ok so Kaner has got too much real life shit to go to have a beer or two (or a lot more) in the pub. You gotta respect that discipline folks. BUT, we still have an episode for you with no. 32 now live: an interview with my nemesis, Dr Recommended.

As always listen at iTunes, Stitcher or DiplomacyGames.com

Bump. I can self-promote, right? Thanks again for having me on, it was a pleasure talking with you guys.

Kaner & I constantly bicker and throw mud at each other's face in episode 33. Is Kaner just being more belligerent this time due to being pretty tipsy before recording? You be the judge! Download from iTunes, Stitcher & DiplomacyGames.com

Going through an unexpectedly busy period at the moment and can't really pay full attention to all of my games. I would like to report a player in an anonymous game
Hey mod team, I’d like to report a player in an anonymous game. I can’t easily describe what happened so it would be easier if you just looked at the chat logs yourself. Needless to say, they were directly attacking a different player calling them all sorts of slurs.

NMRing first turn
New game and not new missing first turns.
Many players miss their first turn in ALL of their games. They have very good position in the rank, with % of victory/draw higher than their % of survive/defeat ... of course, if they give up their games just the first turn, dissatisfied with the country they will have to play.
In my oppinion all abandoned games should count as DEFEATED. What do you think?

Chumbles has passed away
Steve Doubleday was a huge part of the postal Diplomacy scene, particularly in the UK; running his own zine and creating his own variants. He kept playing variants after the move to online, playing regularly here on vDip under the username Chumbles.

Sadly, he passed away in June this year. Rest in peace to a Diplomacy hobby legend.
