Playtest of variant
Hi! I am trying to organize a playtest of a variant I created with some unique rules that made it not possible to implement on vdiplomacy (yet!). I have called it 'Feudal Diplomacy'. [See below for details!]

I have no motivation to keep playing turns, so I figure I could give my only game to someone who does. Sorry for making a new thread, I couldn't find the game-sitters thread.

1900 for vDip: Progress Report (ongoing)
As mentioned in another thread, I've been working on the code and assets necessary to port Baron M. Powell's variant 1900 to vDip and/or webDip.

In order to keep myself accountable in some fashion to actually complete this task, and not just talk about it, I've created a small project plan where I can mark my progress.

My good Lord, this is gorgeous! I really like Ronke's map, it fits 1900 perfectly.

Will the variant go to the lab first? I sure do want to join the first test game!
nopunin10did (1041 D)
24 Feb 18 UTC
Which lab? Do you mean the Russian site?

The rules aren’t totally ready yet.
Enriador (1507 D)
24 Feb 18 UTC
Yeah, the Russian site (http://lab.diplomail.ru/index.php).

When the rules are ready and the variant functional, will you test the variant on the lab or will you throw the variant here as soon as possible?
nopunin10did (1041 D)
24 Feb 18 UTC
That’s not exactly my choice. I can’t access the Russian site from work, so I’d be slower to follow up on questions there. But it might still be better than testing directly on vDip since the core game changes are a bit more extensive.

Just want to give an update. tobi's SCR code worked like a charm! The code for all of 1900's required features have been completed!

https://tinyurl.com/1900-vdip-dev

I've still got some bugs to fix, but I might be able to have 1900 ready for external users within a couple of weeks.

The code upgrades that come with it should make certain other types of variant rules and custom map art much easier to set up in future.

I feel a little guilty being so slow about this with Enriador blazing through variants left-and-right. :-)
nopunin10did (1041 D)
20 Apr 18 UTC
To be clear, by "ready for external users" I mean "ready to be tested somewhere other than my home PC".

Is there a test site other than the Russian one? Keep in mind this would be technical testing rather than playtesting, since the variant's rules and map aren't changing.
Enriador (1507 D)

Amazing news! '1900' is my favorite variant ever, always wanted to play it here on vDip.

Thanks (tobi1 too) for the hard work, it's certainly a feat of coding way beyond my own skills.

Got a chance to sit down and bang away at this again last night. Fixed a few small bugs and figured out the particular SQL issue that had been plagueing me.

Progress Report:
https://tinyurl.com/1900-vdip-dev

I've also completed the writeup for the variant. It currently includes a full transcription of the original rules, which are fairly long because they're filled with commentary and description of map changes. I find this commentary interesting, but it might be a bit much for a variant description.

The big test remaining is the victory condition update. I need to get two powers to 18, making sure the game continues, then tie them at 19, etc.
Enriador (1507 D)
01 Jun 18 UTC
Yay!

The DPJudge had a nice rules summary of 1900. It's not that long.

A link to the Gamer's Guide would be awesome as well.

On victory criteria, I prefer vDip house rules to Baron's in any case. A game of Diplomacy is supposed to end when someone reaches 18, and the vDip method awards more consistent performance rather than complicate the victory criteria. Anyway, good luck with that!
Enriador (1507 D)
01 Jun 18 UTC
You could add "just" the Map Changes summary, add in Starting Positions (so people know there is A TRI, not F TRI for example) and the Suez Canal Rules/Russian Emergency Measures.

http://uk.diplom.org/?page=about_1900
Glad to see one of Baron's variants being adapted for wider play. He is a very good variant designer, and I don't say that too often.

His variants tend to have rules that I believe may be difficult to code, which is too bad, since it has hindered their spread beyond forums employing hand adjudication.

Enriador: After putting years of work into implementing all the other rules, why compromise on the victory conditions?
Enriador (1507 D)
01 Jun 18 UTC
@JECE, "all the other rules" are absolutely essential to the way '1900' works. The tiebreaker criteria isn't.

Anyway, I just pointed out a personal preference. Whether developing such a specific victory criteria is worth it or not is up to @nopunin10did. ;)

My goal is to provide a faithful representation of the original. There's only going to be one extremely minor change: in an NMR during a build phase, if either France or Britain have to destroy units, then the algorithm will treat Egypt and Algeria as "home" SCs.

I'm not really a fan of the vDip house rule on victory conditions, to be honest. I'd hate to make it to 18 at the same time as another power on the map only to be told that I'd lost because in the prior year, I'd had 16, and my opponent had 17. That just seems a tad ridiculous.
nopunin10did (1041 D)
02 Jun 18 UTC
@JECE

It's been about 13 months so far, give or take, though I've been having to find little snippets of time here and there. I'm a programmer for a living, so it's been a little difficult to maintain the motivation to come home and write code after having done so all day.
Enriador (1507 D)

> in an NMR during a build phase, if either France or Britain have to destroy units, then the algorithm will treat Egypt and Algeria as "home" SCs.<

This won't affect the gameplay actually, as for disband purposes a home/normal supply center are the same thing.

> I'd hate to make it to 18 at the same time as another power on the map only to be told that I'd lost because in the prior year, I'd had 16, and my opponent had 17<

Your opponent performed better though - both of you got to 18 at the same time, but they managed to reach 17 SCs before anyone else.

I always thought the original tiebreaker rule a bit ridiculous myself. It's the only major variant I know of where the game may not end once the victory criteria is reached - kinda counterintuitive.

> it's been a little difficult to maintain the motivation to come home and write code after having done so all day.<

We gotta faith in you! Slow but steady, that's my motto.
nopunin10did (1041 D)
02 Jun 18 UTC
It's a twofold victory criterion:
1) Have more centers than anyone else.
2) Have at least 18 centers.

It's more common than you might think.

Anyway, I just finished running a nice long test.
18 & 18? Game continued, check.
19 & 19? Game continued, check.
18 & 19? Game ended in a solo.

We're getting very, very close to finished with this.

I recall only Ambition & Empire having a similar victory criteria, but unfortunately that variant is buried within the depths of the Pouch. =(

These maps look amazing! I really appreciate the contrast and the unit styles. Red Austria will be most interesting.

nopunin10did (1041 D)

Red Turkey, yellow Austria.
Enriador (1507 D)
02 Jun 18 UTC
Yeah, that's what I meant. Green Russia is also a welcome sight.

In most maps of 1900-14 Russia is a dark shade of green. Turkey is mostly red as well, only rarely yellow or green.

Yellow Austria though. Honestly, never saw it. I have seen Red as the most common color (being the dominant color in the Austro-Hungarian flag.

What was the reasoning behind it? Austria's old Imperial flag?
drano019 (2710 D Mod)

Hi all!

Just taking a first look at the map, and it looks sweet! I'm excited to try it! The only thing I would caution about is the colors. Two blues (Britain and France), and two greens (Russia and Italy), and the switch of the "usual" colors for Austria and turkey might throw people off. I realize it's a matter of simply paying attention, but hey, we all know lots of people who don't do that. So while it may be historically accurate, I'd personally vote to keep things in the more traditional and recognizable colors for the powers.

Beyond that, thanks for all the hard work nopunin10did! Can't wait for it to go live!

nopunin10did: I said "years" because you weren't the first vDip player to start coding a 1900 variant. ;-)

Yellow is used because of the Habsburg Flag. It was the flag of the Austrian Empire for a time, and it served as the National Flag of Austria even during the era of Austria-Hungary.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habsburg_flag

Meanwhile, the Ottomans had nearly always used a simple red flag with a white star-and-crescent. So while either yellow or red could work for Austria, only red actually works for Turkey.

Nope, not happening. If the olive/green is too difficult for people to distinguish, I'll consider that, but every other color stays put.
Enriador (1507 D)
02 Jun 18 UTC
The Habsburg flag wasn't really popular, but given how Red is truly Turkey's flag I think this is a good compromise.

I find the names a bit hard to read - is that just me? Especially in water spaces. I think it's due to the white layer around them. If you remove it and make them black, will it be readable on German territory?

I have seen several '1900' maps show up Siberia as a star. I don't like it because it makes SIB appear larger than ordinary supply centers, and since it's actually a fringe space that may never attain build center status I suggest you make less flashy - like a simple square with the same proportions as the SC circles.
nopunin10did (1041 D)
05 Jun 18 UTC
I will probably come back and do an art-improvement pass after the variant has had some wider user testing.

Which version of the map are the names hard to read on? The low-res or high-res?

Taking over Civil Disorders should be free of charge
Reasoning: the player who takes over a Civil Disorder is not just putting themself in a precarious position (as they must evaluate everybody's styles and strategies) but they are also saving the game's balance and fun.

In order to reward/incentive people to take more CDs, I believe that making it free of charge (rather than current 50% discount) would be for the best. Thoughts?

Cold War Tournament
I am looking to start a rated Cold War tournament consisting of group and knockout stages. Groups of 4 will face each other twice, once as each country. The top two (or three, pending interest) from each group will move on to the knockout stage, with each matchup lasting two games. Users will play as each country once. If tied 1-1, an additional two games are played until a winner is determined.

Feature Request: Friends List
Similar to how the site already has functionality for muting and blocking other players, we should be able to add them to a friends list so that tracking them down to send PMs is more convenient. It would also make hosting games with players you know you enjoy playing with much easier. I don’t believe that this feature is currently in the issue tracker, and it seems like it would be very easy to implement given the current muting and blocking features already in place.
