obsolete Sengoku variant
Hi all, designer of Sengoku here. I would love to get the latest version of Sengoku in use on this system, as it is much more balanced. Found here: http://dipwiki.com/index.php?title=Sengoku
Even if the DP system, can't be used, the version at http://nairenvorbeck.angelfire.com/ is still better than the one in use currently. Poor Mori needs a fair chance :-) Anyone willing/able to help me get these implemented?

I actually think Dark Ages would work a lot better without the Anglo-Saxon position, reducing it to two triangles.

That will be great if you can find a way to balance it Benjamin. 5 or less is really a step down in both playability in my book.
Can't promise at this point too early. I also do think think that principle, while generally true in balanced variants, may not prove true in asymmetric scenarios. Hope you'll give it a chance either way.

Ben, have you conducted any play testing of this? I think most would agree that Oda has an advantage in theory, although this is most commonly observed in no-press games. In full press games Oda's strong starting position can be a significant disadvantage when early leader syndrome kicks in. I appreciate you looking into ways to improve an already enjoyable variant. However, it seems that a great deal of nerfing Oda has taken place. Have you taken care to make sure that you don't go too far?
Hi Randy - no, though I certainly intend to. We are even earlier than the playtesting stage of this variant at this point. Striking the correct balance for Oda will certainly be the challenge of a successful asymmetric design here. Oda must have a credible threat to destroy (without help of any ally) any one of his four peripheral rivals for the intended function of this design to work. I thus aim to create a dilemma for any Mori/Shimazu or Hojo/Uesugi juggernaut pairs: all four working in conjunction must have the ability to defeat Oda, but Oda (by supporting key neutrals/lopsided defense) must have the ability to remove any one of the four from victory contention even while facing attacks on both sides. I believe I am close to that now. Work remains to be done to ensure that each peripheral power also has a viable path to victory cooperating with Oda against their neighbor *and/or* bypassing the Oda core and claiming gains along the coast. Without this being possible and fairly evident, I agree that the early leader syndrome would plague Oda players.

I've just updated the draft map to include the current starting units for each position. Next will be to add multiple land adjacencies ("bridges") and sea zones that will close some of the larger open distances on the map, particularly between Oda and Shimazu.
also, I am counting on the number of SCs in the extreme periphery (Tsushima, Hizen, Bungo, and Higo in the south, and Sado, Dewa, Mutsu, and Hitachi in the North) to draw the peripheral powers into conflict. (Sado SC may revert to an impassible territory, and the SC move to Shimotsuke...with no neutral army...to increase this tension further)
open to hearing other suggestions on how to balance Oda's position with the peripheral powers too!
several more updates this AM. more sea zones in place, some borders adjusted. same link as above for new map. special sea zones added (light shade) - function as normal sea zones themselves, but all land territories touching one of these sea zones are considered land adjacent to each other. (for example, Kii-Tosa. Aki-Iyo. Bungo-Nagato. Izu-Kazusa. Mikawa-Ise. Armies may move directly between them without convoy.)
latest map - the coastal regions have evolved slightly. They are *not* normal sea zones, and may not be occupied by any unit (rather, they are moved through). They are there only to indicate adjacency between all the spaces they touch.

Now that looks really interesting...
Thanks Oli! Here's the full blurb (draft) on how they work. They proved critical to shrinking the space between north and south and given Oda equal impetus to grow (read, attack) each of their four rivals.

Coastal regions (indicated by light blue on the map) are used to indicate adjacency of multiple coastal land spaces. All land and sea spaces connected by a *single* coastal region are considered adjacent to each other. For example, Fleet Nagato supports Fleet Iwami – Tsushima, and Fleet Iwami – Tsushima are both valid orders and the move succeeds, dislodging the neutral army. Fleets in adjacent sea spaces may move and support through them (as if they were not there at all.) For example, Fleet South Sea of Japan supports Neutral Army Bungo Holds is a valid order and the support succeeds. Coastal regions are not considered named sea spaces themselves, and no units may occupy them. Units may not move or support through more than one

If you think I should create a test-variant from your map just send me a line.
Once I have a map with proper names I can easily make all variant-files from this.
Hi Oli - your call there. If you want to proceed from here, I'm all for it. Here's what's left on my personal to do list...lemme know what I can do to make the vDip implementation easier, happy to help in any way I can:

Names Map - DONE
Abbreviation Map - NEXT
Start Position Map - PENDING
Realpolitik BW Maps - PENDING
Realpolitik Region Tool - PENDING
Dipwiki.com Upload - PENDING

The font on your Names Map is a bit blurry. A version with a clearer font would help a lot. Also once you have the the Realpolitik-files done I can convert these to the webdip-format.

I have some time, so I will convert the Balkans1860 variant first and do the Sengoku-variant right after.
Thanks Oli! I'll try to find a better font

Hi Benjamin.
I will start coding the variant today.
Any updated done by you to this? If not I will just move along and hack this in the webdip format.
ah, yes updates indeed - I have been quiet (playing Dark Ages!), but not idle. Link to follow
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B2CiokzfWGBhZFpWRmNVRGZUc2M - abbs

these are probably ready for implementation unless anyone sees glaring problems I'm missing?

as shown by the little "bullseyes" on the start map - thanks!

Ahh, ok. Didn't check the start map, because the starting positions are the last to do...
Are there any neutral forces...? Should I lock the pottype to WTA and is it build-anywhere (like the Sengoku5 variant)

Let's talk about scoring? More specifically, about whether the dreaded Points Per Supply Center (PPSC) scoring should remain an option?

1 v 1 games on variant maps
I am not a coder (sic) so I was wondering how hard is/was it to code 1 v 1 games? Is it reasonable to think that variant maps (Modern, Ancient Med, etc) could be set up to create 1 v 1 games? The idea of having a larger group of countries to play against each other is intriguing. I just don't know if it possible, or doable.

How old school are you?
I am not very tech savvy so forgive me. I think I started dip on some RSS pages using Netscape at work in maybe 1996(?) does that make sense? All email based through Judges. What were they called? USDJ or something. I remember FROG but they all spoke French. Haha. I used to stand outside my office in the snow smoking a cig with a hand drawn map with about 100 crossing out for each phase using coloured pens. Ah web based interactive maps?!?! Luxury!!!

New Maps
I'm super new to the site and I was curious how new maps were made and/or submitted. I noticed a lot of the maps look a bit old and it got me thinking about what it would take to create a higher resolution version of a game map. Are there certain file formats a map must be in or is this all a responsibility for site admins only? Thanks!

Custom phase bug
This might be better in the Mods section, but I thouht I'd post here first to see if other users have any input.

I'm trying to create a new game with a custom phase length. When I select "Custom" from the drop-down menu, nothing happens. However, when I select "2 days, 2 hours", I've given the option to input a phase length. Hopefully this is an easy fix.

Tactics
In year one when you just meeting everyone, maybe there anonymous but for sure you don't know any of them. How do you know who to trust?
They can be lying through their teeth and text doesn't show tone of voice or eye contact so you have no idea. If you believe them they may stab you. If you don't you venture into a DMZ and piss them off. Ask around to others and you get rumors or nothing. This game seems so much better suited to face to face.

Classic Mini-Tourney - Is there interest?
I thought about making a mini-tourney - comprising a single game - using a similar scheme to most Face-to-Face scoring systems.

Basically it'll be a Classic game, running until Fall 1907 and a PPSC structure. The bet would be 100 points - for a ultimate pot worth 700 points.
