Do any of you play political rp minecraft or some other game?
I joined a political roleplay minecraft server recently where we build nations both physically in the game and on a custom map that looks similar to a diplomacy board. I've had a bit of fun making redstone farms and such to increase our economy, claim more land, and even make alliances with other nations. Does anyone else here have experience with minecraft political rp specifically or perhaps some other online multiplayer game?

How does game limit work?
Currently I can't join public games. It said, "Due to game limits you cannot join games."
However, when I click into "game limits" to check the details, it told me "=> No game limits apply".
Yet I still can't join games. I wonder how does this limit actually work, or is it a bug?

Variant Cataloging
I've been trying to keep track of variants made. Recently Stephen Agar came back on the scene and I am helping him amass variants over the past 20 years or so of his inactivity. I've made a google spreadsheet that contains the ones he's cataloged on his various websites and added a bunch that I knew of. I've also made a form to submit variants to be cataloged.

Phase Swap?
In the "Create a New Game" tab, when you select the "custom phase length" option, a new drop-down menu appears: "Time Until Phase Swap." It has options ranging from "No phase switch" to 6 hours. I can't find any documentation on what this does. Does anyone know? Does it make retreats and builds shorter than movement turns? Any help would be appreciated!

I will post more information here in the coming days, but to start with I will GM the bourse, and depending on how many players sign up will decide the map.

Victory conditions will be twofold:
1. Overall winner (SCs and VPs)
2. Bourse winner (VPs)
I've been looking forward to this since the last one ended prematurely! I'm in.

Bourse is a game that runs 'inside' a game. Essentially you are buying and selling stock of a power in the game that is running. Speculation and misinformation is encouraged between players, buying into good solid stock can see your net-worth increase, but beware! If a country is eliminated from the game than that country's stock is reduced to nothing. Play large and win big on the stock market!

The rules are:

1) A Diplomacy Bourse is associated with a Diplomacy game, and runs parallel with it.

2) Any number of players may participate. Each begins with 1000 units of currency of each country in the game: Austrian Crowns, English Pounds, French Francs, German Marks, Italian Lire, Russian Roubles and Turkish Piastres. All currencies are equal at the start, each being worth $1 US. Throughout the game the value of currencies is expressed in Dollars.

*However due to the nature of vDip the players themselves will compete in the variant, so if there are 10 players who want to give this a shot then Modern will be the variant played

3) Orders are in two parts, buying and selling. Players may never sell more than 500 units of any one currency at one time, but may buy as many as he may afford. Any surplus after purchases may be retained as a Dollar balance against future purchases. There is no limit to the number of dollars that may be withdrawn from this balance at one time, but it may never go into deficit.

4) Each time 100 units of a currency are sold its value in relation to the dollar drops 1¢. Thus if in the first season the total of all orders results in 500 more Marks being sold than bought the price of the Mark for the following season would be $0.95. Each time an aggregate of 100 units is bought the price rises similarly by 1¢. Only complete multiples of 100 units affect the price - thus if 299 more Marks were bought than sold its value would rise by only 2¢.

5) Each season the GM will list who bought and sold what, old and new prices, players' holdings and Dollar surpluses, and their net worth.

6) When a country is eliminated from the Diplomacy game (i.e. when its Winter supply centre holding is 0), the value of its currency drops to zero and all trading in that currency ceases. Other than this, the value of a currency may never fall below 1¢. There is no upper limit to the value of a currency.

7) When the associated Diplomacy game ends, each Bourse player's "Victory Points" will be calculated as follows: for each currency in which he has a holding, the number of blocks of 100 units of currency multiplied by the number of supply centres owned by that country in the Diplomacy game. Thus if Turkey wins with 18 centres, with France on 14 and England on 2, and a player has 6000 Pounds, 10,000 Piastres and 4000 Francs, then his VPs would be 120+1800+560 = 2480. The GM will endeavour to maintain running totals of Victory Points during the middle and end game.

8) Orders may not be made conditional. If orders are incorrect or illegal, the GM will adjust them in accordance with what he discerns to be the player's wishes. Players are asked to check adjudications for errors, since the Diplomacy game will not normally be delayed on account of Bourse errors. Players are also requested to include details of their calculations with their orders.

Great to have you onboard kevdog8,

Some nitty-gritty details:

1. Phase length - 2 days minimum
2. Bourse adjudication - will take place once a season finishes. Simple market moves will be posted in global, and full bourse orders will be posted in the forum
3. Bourse buy/sell orders will be accepted via PM to me up until the end of a season
4. Early game - I will pause the game when there are no builds/retreats to allow time to post the bourse results. However when builds/retreats phases kick in it will be a gentleman's agreement to ready your orders once the bourse has been posted
5. Variant TBA depending on signup
6. Special Rules Game - as this is an SRG the game itself will be unranked
7. Anonymous draw/concede voting
8. Random country assignments

negotiables:
1. Phase length - happy to go longer if that's what players want
2. Anonymous players - if players want it I'm happy to facilitate anonymity on the board, but the bourse will not be anonymous.

Sorry, but is this a new feature here in vDiplomacy or you just play this Bourse game parallel on a game and will do the administration here in the forum?
Super interesting idea. Will be fun to follow.
Aaarrrggghhh! Some games are merely tough to pass up…. and then there’s Bourse. Damn I wish I could do it. Have fun all. I’ll get back in someday kaner. Maybe Bourse 2024!

I’d like to give this a try.

Question though: say a player is eliminated on the board, can they still participate in the bourse or are they just done, out, it’s over?
kaner406 (2103 D Mod (B))

@butterhead - welcome aboard. If a player is eliminated they can still participate in the bourse (even win it!).

@Dr. Recommended - bummer... You know it will be a blast, it would have been good to get an old hat like yourself involved in 2022.

@SimonPeterWatson - it's even more fun when you play!

@Udvarid - the bourse runs parallel to the game, the competitors on the board are the competitors in the bourse. I will do all the adjudication, forum management etc... Shall I add you to the list?

Listening to the tobi interview podcast. Does Bourse enable short selling? Could I form a coalition to short sell a country and then destroy them? Also, is there thought of a finite amount of stock/currency for each country so that you have to find willing sellers to generate price discovery? Perhaps everyone begins with 600 units of their own asset and 100 each from the 6 other powers. Then not knowing what other players are holding through time could become another dimension.
kaner406 (2103 D Mod (B))
24 Apr 22 UTC
@gopher - there is nothing at all stopping you from forming a trading coalition, either to boost the price of the stock, to tank the stock, manipulate the SC count of players on the board, or destroy a country after artificially boosting a currency. Bear in mind that the price of the stock doesn't effect how many Victory Points you receive from holding that stock, it is the ratio of how much stock you hold of a country's currency against the amount of SCs that country possess that changes the worth of that stock. Also you cannot sell more that 500 units of stock per turn.

We have in the past looked into having a finite amount of stock available, but the complexity of managing a system that married buy/sell orders between players became to complex to manage.
kaner406 (2103 D Mod (B))
24 Apr 22 UTC
*** you cannot sell more that 500 units of any single stock per turn.

Why wouldn't this just devolve into being a public observable commitment device for alliances?
gopher27 (1606 D Mod)
24 Apr 22 UTC
This feels like it is just an intentional attempt to distract people from the Winning thread in order to bury it in hopes of it eventually locking with the Australian coalition winning.

BTW, the Winning thread would need to fall onto like the 5th or 6th page of threads in the forum.
kaner406 (2103 D Mod (B))
25 Apr 22 UTC
@gopher - Why wouldn't this just devolve into being a public observable commitment device for alliances?

Ultimately it's because there can only be one winner, and we're diplomacy players. Adding economics to the game creates a whole new set of negotiating tools and diplomatic contrivances.

Could I sell more stock than I own and redeploy the value into other assets? Can balances go negative? Could Turkey ally with Russia and then build up large negative positions in Austrian thalers before destroying Austria?

I still think that having a publicly observable Bourse holding in an ally's assets would serve as a commitment device in ways that insure against stabby-stabby.
kaner406 (2103 D Mod (B))
25 Apr 22 UTC
- you cannot sell more stock than you own.
- balances cannot go negative
- not sure what you mean by a negative position, but if you wanted to divest all stock in any given country then that's fine.

Yes you can view the bourse as a means of a publicly held commitment to an alliance - alternatively you could also use that as a means to disguise an upcoming stab etc...
