WWIV 6.2 map question
gameID=16844

On the new WWIV map, are armies allowed to move from land directly to islands that border the land? For example GLP, CPV, REU, etc.

reliability rating
my reliability rating is only 90+ after some vacations in which i could not complete orders, so as i tried to join a new game, i couldn't because i already had 9 games. I know the way to increase your rating is taking over for someone who left again, but now apparently i can't do that either :P Any suggestions?

Noob question
When are new units created? I've conquered 4 or 5 supply centres but still only have 3 units. The friend I'm playing against has 6. In depth explanation would be awesome. Thanks

Feature request – game status icon additions?
expose: add game status icons for "last one to finalize" and "time is nearly up" – details inside!
Hirnsaege (1903 D)

as i have quite some games running at the moment, i constantly check which ones are due soon or in which ones i'm the last player that has not yet finalized to give them priority threatment.
especially where no talking is involved (gunboats) this could be useful to speed things up sometimes.

so i thought it would be nice to see this right next to the games name in the game status icon, just like there is now the double exclamation mark, message icon, saved ordres icon, etc.

so this would be something like:
– a clock symbol with exclamation mark for "hurry, time is up soon!"
– a hour glass for "come on, move on now, everyone is waiting for you ..."

any counter-proposals, additions etc. are welcome of course, maybe we can find something that the majority thinks is useful and can be implemented without turning the code upside down completely.

Well on your home page, they are ranked from the closest ending phase to the furthest awayending phase(EX: a game with 5 hours left is shown above games with 12 hours left), so simply looking at that(It clearly says how much time is left) would suffice I would think? As for the "last one to finalize", A Green check means finalized. A black check means saved but not finalized. a - means no orders required for that turn. A !! Means no moves entered yet... Once again, looking at that, you can tell when you are the last to finalize, and make that a priority. Adding things like what you suggest, in my opinion, would not be useful as we already have tools for that...
Hirnsaege (1903 D)

yes, that's the way i'm doing it at present – so of course there are ways, but there might be faster ways, that's what i was proposing.

to specify more precisely:
i'm maily talking about showing those status icons the game tabs just below the main menu of this site, that can be seen just whereever you are on this site and already shows all currently pending games (all except the "-" ones) – so we are halfway in that shortcut solution already, as those tabs would not be totally necessary as we could look on our personal home pages too.
so my proposal would just be a refinement of this, no totally new concept.

@butter what you're taking about, you are only able to see on the home page. I think what he is talking about is something you can see when navigating through any dip page

Ahh I see what you are saying Hirnsaege. Something added would be nice, but I guess it would depend on if the amount of coding needed outweighed the usefulness.

Looking at what you were talking about... I think the Icon for "time is almost up" could be very useful... The one for you being the last to enter orders, maybe not so much because a lot of players are going to just save anyways because they need the extra time for one reason or another, so that wouldn't matter much.

But was is time is almost up?
In a 24 hour game is 1 hour maybe time is almost up, but does this change for 48 or 72 hour games? If you login and have "only" 5 hours left, but maybe don't check back the next 6 hours even 5 hours is "almost up".

^ how about 1/4th of whatever the game-phase timer happens to be?
butterhead (1272 D)
26 Nov 13 UTC
Or just an across the board time of like 6 hours remaining?
Hirnsaege (1903 D)
26 Nov 13 UTC
the time of "soon" needs to be discussed of course, yes ...
it could be:
– a personal setting for each player (lots to do to implement)
– a set timeframe like 4 hours (that's half of a "work day", which is my personal perspektive of "need to do this soon!" but of course this may vary)
– a percentage of the games time frame as proposed (1/4th could be suitable indeed?)
– a percentage as above + additionally a "last hour running" warning?

as for the "last one to finalize" feature: some people like to use the extra time the game gives to them for various legitimate reasons, but still it would be nice just to know you are the last one – whatever you do with this information is still in the hand of each player of course.
Let's have the last hour warning for all games with phase length exceeding one hour, and a last 10/15 minute warning for games with phase length of or below one hour. This will be simple enough.

The game will sometimes give the option of going somewhere by land or through a convoy. My question is, why would you ever want to go by convoy in these cases?

New WWIV font colours suck dog balls
I greatly appreciate the new WWIV map, but seriously some of those font colours for players are horrendous. While it may not be a perfect match with their colour on the board, its something that needs majorly fixing.

It mentions in the new WWIV description that you can play version of the game with a UN rule, what is that rule? I think I've heard Tomahaha and someone else mention it, but I've never been clear on what it meant.

Extending the advanced options for game creation?

what do you think about making some variant-specific features like BuildAnywhere, Pick your Countries or Fog of War a general option for every game?

Capture Your Capital
I once saw someone refer to a modern map game whereby everyone was given a target on the other side of the map that they had to get to and hold. Does anyone know how this was set up (e.g. which did each country have to aim for?) and would anyone be interested in trying to set a game of it up?
