Is England* vs Turkey truly balanced?
The stats spread on England* vs Turkey is innocuous enough. England* wins 55% of games which do not end in a draw, Turkey wins 45%. England is favored, but not to the extent that Turkey can't win; the game is not balanced, but it also isn't drastically skewed either way.

However, I have recently encountered an opening from England that I'm struggling to counter as Turkey.

@abadu - so it is. when I take my years-long sabbaticals from Diplomacy, it's usually because the last game I played made me feel bad about what I had to do to win.

@BobRoss, point 1 I agree entirely. Its entirely possible to be at war one game and not in another as every game is a separate dynamic.

point 2 Is where I disagree, I like to keep everything that happens in one game in that game, I don't think that should then be shared in another game at all.

On a related note, how would people feel if two players found themselves in more than one game together and started making deals across games, ie "if you do this in Game A I will do something in Game B"?

That's metagaming and explicitly forbidden in the rules. I guess there will always be at least some subconscious preconceptions when you meet a player for the second time which is why I prefer anonymous games.
@Start - on Bob's point 2, I agree with both of you to an extent. Using the knowledge that a certain player likes to stab early or does this that or the other in certain circumstances is smart play. Sharing that knowledge with others, however, is metagaming (and also giving too much info is bad play anyhow).
Deals across games is an explicit rule violation unless part of a tournament where it is accepted (not all tournaments, only those where it has been agreed upon by the TD and players).

The use of the term metagaming to describe the behavior of crossgaming. Metagaming is an example of play of a game or games within a larger game/competition such as a tournament. In these instances metagaming is not only allowed, it is intended and expected. Crossgaming is an entirely different animal of unethical play, one example being the game A, game B scenario mentioned above. It also includes revenge, automatic alliances, alliances based on real life friendships, and an array of other motivations outside the game itself. The continued misuse of the word metagaming adds confusion and serves to perpetuate the behavior.

Yeah, I'm in my first non-anonymous game in a while and I can already see players can't help being affected by those they come across in other games. I really prefer to play anonymous, as it really cuts down on cross-gaming.
@RUFF - Meta means "outside" so technically crossgaming is a form of metagaming.
Not that wikipedia is perfect but...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meta

Meta (from the Greek preposition and prefix meta- (μετά-) meaning "after", or "beyond")
I would say all of your examples are "beyond the game" and therefore, metagaming.
Oh, and it can't be crossgaming if two players join the site and, in their very first game, team up in an unbreakable alliance because they are real life friends (one of your examples) as there hasn't been multiple games to cross over.

When people "go for the draw" from the beginning of the game and never even try to solo at all.

Also when people get mad at you for stabbing them, it's just a game after all!
RUFFHAUS 8 (2490 D)

Yes, crossgaming is a form of metagaming. It's the unethical kind. Not all metagaming is unethical. All crossgaming is. Original point stands.

"Oh, and it can't be crossgaming if two players join the site and, in their very first game, team up in an unbreakable alliance because they are real life friends (one of your examples) as there hasn't been multiple games to cross over"

This is just cheating. And you're diffusing the point with you stubborness. I didn't say that crossgaming was the only improper metagaming. I said that it's annoying when people refer to crossgaming as metagaming. It's like referring to Rugby as football, and saying that goalkeeper should be sent off for a foul. Rugby is a form of football, but it doesn't have goalleeers.

Metagaming = legal and illegal behavior
Crossgaming = illegal behavior

Specifics matter here, particularly when so many players cannot understand why this behavior is a problem.
Folks - I'll tally these up in about 24 hours, and pick one to get input from the various site admins (Kaner and I plan to record mid next week and will cover one of these off.)

So keep the ball rolling!

Crossgaming *is* a type of metagaming, though. That's how subsets work.

Existing alliances from out of game are an illegal form of metagaming, but they are not crossgaming (unless the 'out of game' is 'from another game', which was not the scenario presented by YCHTT), since crossgaming requires multiple games to play across.

People who complain about lack of games and varients but do they start games? Current game list is dominated by tournaments... this must be causing game start ups to drop off.
Gotcha, RUFF. I thought you were setting out a distinction as if the two were different sets entirely, not crossgaming a subset of metagaming. Sorry for the confusion.
So experience meta = legal (using your knowledge of how one acts in certain scenarios to manipulate the outcome to your advantage).

Life gaming (where people who know each other IRL and choose to have unbreakable alliances or communicate outside the game as a result) = illegal

Crossgaming (except when expected meta for multi game tournaments) = illegal

External factor gaming (bourse affecting orders and such) varies from scenario to scenario and circumstance to circumstance.

Force drawn games
Games with fixed end year are (for ranking purposes) treated like solo victories for the power with the largest SC tally (even when PPSC scoring is used). Is that intentional? Not that I think it matters much to me, but I do find it rather odd, it would seem like the more logical approach would be that they are treated as force drawn, or possibly use affect ranking differently depending on scoring system used.

To Everyone in Furnace of Affliction
I'm really sorry, as I was trying to fix the Indonesia Build bug the game sent everyone into CD and cancelled itself. This was because I forgot about another bug - if you enter all holds, it counts as an NMR even if saved, so when I tried to advance the game 2 phases it assumed everyone had NMR'd twice (even though I'd set hold orders for everyone).
