The winner doesn't get "screwed" - he still gets a considerable part of the pot, even more than under PPSC. Almost half of solos here on vDip are under PPSC, and still no sign of apocalypse on the horizon.
"Draw reduction" already happens - even more heavily - under WTA, since everyone has to share the pot equally. Under SoS, there is few need for "draw reduction" since you'll probably win much more by simply conquering centers off larger/more meaningful opposition.
In SoS, there is no such thing as protecting a 1 SC nation - I never heard of it to be frank. SoS's logic is that of taking in as many centers as possible, so it's hard to imagine a context where it's more valuable to keep the minor player alive. Perhaps the reason for it exists, but even if it does, it's rare enough to be irrelevant.
I agree that the best score is WTA (which shouldn't mean it has to be the *only* score!), but I don't get your point about "draws acting like a cancel", where even eliminated powers get their points back. Are you talking about Draw Zero Scoring? I kinda like it, if not for 1) it makes the grind towards stalemate lines even more boring than they already are and 2) ABC liked rewarding draws.
I would vote for Thaddeus Black's system of "Draw-Disvalued" Scoring (50% of points is Draw-Zero, 50% under Calhamer Scoring). But again, it leaves a question about how short games should be scored - SoS is still my favorite option.
