A New Dip Zine
I'm launching a new Dip zine called "The Velvet Glove". Unlike The Diplomatic Pouch" and "World Diplomacy", TVG is principally aimed at the online Dip hobby.

I'm launching a new Dip zine called "The Velvet Glove". Unlike The Diplomatic Pouch" and "World Diplomacy", TVG is principally aimed at the online Dip hobby.

I am looking for articles on any of the following:
- I'm going to run a series of articles on playing each of the seven powers
- general articles on playing Dip
- articles linked to Dip but not actual play
- articles on Variants
- articles from people who've never written before.

I'm also looking for editors for various sections.

The website TVG will be published on is http://thevelvetglovecont.wix.com/the-velvet-glove

If you're interested in sending me anything or taking a role on the zine, you can see how to do it from the contact page.

Trolling? Really?

I am offering people the chance to take part in writing for the Hobby. I've no need to troll.

Perhaps you would like to explain how I am trolling?
Synapse (814 D)

I don't see this working, for the reason that my online-Dip site didn't work, and also another online-Dip zine which I know of at playdiplomacy.com has only a handful of followers....good luck though
Tomahaha (1170 D)

This is not trolling in the least, maybe (just maybe) Mapu was being a bit tongue in cheek offering his expert opinion as such a troller and not accusing you of doing so here? (but I tend to agree with your position of him claiming you to be doing so)

As far as it not working, why poo-poo his attempt? Maybe he is doing a better job of making such a zine than did Synapse? I can already see this new zine is being told about here and on Redscape , I have to believe he is hitting as many dip communities as he can Vdip and playdiplomacy are not the only sites and in fact are far less "into" the hobby as are many other sites. I welcome the new attempt and wish him the best, It may fail it may not, nothing wrong with trying!
Safari (1530 D)

I think that Mapu was referring to writing about how trolling impacts the communities of diplomacy sites, or something. I could be wrong though.
Synapse (814 D)
08 Dec 14 UTC
Nothing wrong with trying, however I doubt other sites would get the 50 or so members that I got during the webdip fallout, and I have first hand experience of how difficult it is to retain those 50 or so members...

The point of this isn't to get a website running. I have enough time taken on websites at the moment. I run two Dip sites already and they are both doing pretty well (one being pretty new).

This is simply to give people the chance to be part of the zine. The website is simply where I'm publishing the zine from (as well as publishing a pdf version and running an article bank).

Anyway, if you're interested in writing for it, as this is probably the principle site for playing Variants, I'd very much appreciate it.

I'll write for it, how much do you pay?

See how successful my trolling is? I can write an article about it -- or maybe just an exclusive excerpt from my full article people can buy.
Synapse (814 D)

I'd say a £10 annual subscription is fair.. and £15 for writing the article...

You don't want Synapse writing the article, rick. Look at those stellar win records here and on WebDip. (no offense, SYnapse)

@rick.leeds.
Thanks for the invite. Please disregard the various ankle biters on this forum, they mean you no harm. You have a great idea and I for one would be interested to contribute... let me think about it.

@Synapse
So you have a sour taste in your mouth at the non-success of your website. Get over it.

@Everyone
I think that this is a wonderful opportunity to highlight what we do here & what we offer. I think that as a website we are a flagship for offering variants to the online community and so we should contribute to the hobby as a whole. I would hate to think that we have become a group of naval gazers. Let's gear up and offer something of what we are capable of!

I don't know...writing for free nowadays seems very lame, even Cracked will give you a few quid for "top 10 twists in sci-fi movies" or whatever.
rick.leeds (0 D)
09 Dec 14 UTC
@kaner406: I am definitely looking for articles about different websites and what they have to offer. There are some excellent Dip sites out there.

@Synapse: Perhaps Cracked has a budget, I dunno. Certainly, though, Dip zines have always been subject to voluntary contributions. When they were printed zines people paid a small subscription for postal costs but they were run at a loss with printing and photocopying. As most zines are now published via the web then they tend only to be costs for website maintenance, if that. Certainly neither the Pouch nor Diplomacy World pay for contributions. That's how the Hobby works: people volunteer services *shrug*

Cracked gets 1.5 million daily pageviews, worth $5000 a day... lol... "even"...

I could host it if you want to get rid of the wix ads and such. I haven't figured out how charitable I'd be, but any money I would ask would be a nominal fee to compensate for the costs I make, rather than to get me a profit. Let me know if that interests you.
Synapse (814 D)

rick.leeds (0 D)
13 Dec 14 UTC
Thanks, steephie22 but I'm not bothered about the site being on Wix right now. I'm not going to spend anything on it until I know it's going to keep itself running. We really don't have enough set promises for articles to know whether we'll fill issue 1 yet :)

How bad/ good idea would this be? I'm not sure, since Russia has a huge advantage, and England needs time to develop. Food for thought.

The Buttergoose tournament!!!
"I'm dying for tourneys on this site, I don't get enough."
This was a statement from Sandgoose. I find this as a plea for us to start a new tournament. I am thinking of a version similar to the Whittle Down Tourney:

Pirates variant: clipper 2-spaces movement doubts
I asked in the preliminary phase of the game and seems a lot of players have the same doubts about how does the 2-space movement works, particularly regarding the intermediate space, if this one is occupied or attacked. The rules are unclear.

An asymmetrical variant: Empire and Barbarians
In essence, a well-fortified and strong "Empire," played by two players, holds a large number of starting territories. The remaining players are Barbarians and start out with one (or a similarly low number) army on the outskirts of the board.

Regarding the pervailance of attacking Austria...
I'm honestly perplexed at the current trend amongst Italian players to attack Austria from the outset. Honestly the strategy simply makes a stronger Turkey. Could someone please explain to me why so many consider this to be a good opening?

Diplomacy: The Movie
I'm not kidding. OK, it's simply called "Diplomatie" (mostly in French), and it has nothing to do with the board game, but it's a decent talking heads movie set during the liberation of Paris in WW2: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diplomacy_%282014_film%29

Who knows, you might pick up a negotiation tactic or two...
