Halloween Stories
In recognition of this fun holiday, I figured some of us should share some Halloween tales. Have at it. Personal experience (paranormal experience, party story, you as a youngin' trick-or-treating with your lads) scary story, any Halloween literature, differences between Halloween country-country, family tradition, etcetera. Have fun with it- Looking forward to seeing some neat responses.

Happy Halloween Everyone!!

Not much of a story but up here in the north, I have taken the kids trick or treating in 6 inches of snow one time!

Inches are bullshit. Never quite got the US measuring system, be it lenght or weight.
Tomahaha (1170 D)
23 Oct 14 UTC
It's not the "US measuring system", Blame the British, we use theirs!
They changed and we didn't but it's still theirs and not ours!
I also agree with your metric being better with the exception of temperature.

Wow, only 4 post in, and already the topic has changed.

when the standard system was created. it was based off of an arbitrary scale. noone chose 212.8 to be boiling nor did they choose 32.1 to be freezing. the scale was set that way and that is what the scientist recorded the temperature to be. The metric system was created after. that is why 0 is freezing and 100 is boiling.

the same can be said about length and weight. (i think, correct me if i am wrong)

so i would say the standard system is not at all stupid, in fact its genius. the fact that the US has not adopted the metric system is fucking stupid though.

this change all happened on oct 31st, that is how it is relevant to this thread

on halloween, i was working on decorations when i had to use a socket that measured 5/32 inches and i was so angry because everyone else just gets to use a 4 mm socket

I do LOVE how Halloween is the one day a year women are encouraged to look slutty.

eh, Halloween isn't a big deal in the Philippines. There's some trick or treating in a few, small neighborhoods (read: walled, rich-people villages), but that's about it. Costumes aren't big either.

I think it has some religious connotations though I never go to Catholic mass so I don't know.
KICEMEN17 (1075 D)
23 Oct 14 UTC
I think you're correct- it derived from religion. I thought I heard about it being some ancient druid religion that did some sort of demon ritual thing or whatever, and then Catholics later on picked up the same idea kind of but not really. Bleh I don't know. I'm sure a quick Google search would answer these questions haha. But I'd rather hypothesize within a forum. It's more fun.

Somebody write a scary story or festive poem. Let's get creative. CreepyPasta even.

If you're up for it and feeling bored/creative- Write a short story based on one of these pictures. I'll do one too.

From what I recall long ago it was a pagan holiday and the church decided it easier to join them than to eliminate it so they took many of the customs, changed a few others, then things morphed over time to become what we now have. Something that really has nothing to do with religion despite starting as such. It's just stupid scary fun

I also heard a while ago that Halloween is now the number two holiday in America as far as holiday related sales go. Christmas is king but Halloween passed Valentines Day, Easter, St Patricks Day, Independence Day and Super Bowl Sunday (that's pretty impressive!)
Best Halloween story ever has no fewer than 4 ghosts. A Christmas Carol Bu Charles Dickens. And anyone who doesn't think the ghost of Christmas yet to come isn't scary and doesn't have a scary future to show...
How does Halloween relate to All Saints' Day on 1st Nov?
Halloween is All Hallow's Eve. That's where the name comes from. Hallow being Holy or Saint.

Our Father who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name...

Our Father in heaven,
Holy is your name...

1 kg = 1 litre of water
1 litre = a cube 10cmx10cmx10cm
1 metre = 100 cm also one ten-millionth of the distance from the Earth's equator to the north pole
1 km = 1000 metres
The temperature thing is similar, Celsius is based on the value of water freezing at 0 degrees and boiling water at 100 degrees. Kelvin uses the same integer of temperature as Celsuis, but starts 0 degrees at absolute zero (can't get any colder). Fahrenheit chose two arbitrary temperatures - the temp of an average human body and cold brine - to mark his 0 and 100 degrees of temperature.

The whole metric system works together on a base power of 10. The only three countries in the world that don't use this quite logical system are the USA, Liberia and Myanmar.

Average French foot? Or just a well hung one?
Tomahaha (1170 D)
24 Oct 14 UTC
I understand why Celsius is as it is, What I said about not liking that system is simply because the degrees are too far apart and the closer degrees are to one another in Farenheit is more noticed, example:
from 50 to 70 degrees F is a pretty big difference to the way things feel, a 20 degree difference is noticeable and each degree is noticed
The equal in C is 10 to 21, only 11 degrees
It's just about a 2 degree difference and I don't care for that. Now if C was reported in half degrees, I would have less problem but I have never heard weather reports done in half degrees celcius. The base 10 is awesome stuff, the 100 = boiling and 0 = freezing is again awesome stuff.

Back to Halloween
As a kid I used to start trick or treating early and finish late 6pm to 8pm
and in those two hours I would FILL a pillow case with candy, I would eat a bit here and there for MONTHS! When I used to take my kids we did similar, their friends would do a few houses only and after a couple years I was bringing along a gaggle of girls, maybe 10 of them all greedy for more candy!
KICEMEN17 (1075 D)
24 Oct 14 UTC
My buddies and I did the same thing! Hit as many houses as possible- Till people became annoyed that we were still out. Then we went to one of our houses and played 'candy poker.' It was how we all learned Texas Hold 'Em!

Nowadays I set up a hockey goal and make kids shoot to get candy. If they hit a target I give them a few extra pieces. The neighborhood loves it, so it's become kind of tradition. Lots of fun, the kids enjoy it, and it spreads the word about the greatest sport to play. Though, this can be done with any sport. Soccer, Football, Soccer, Basketball. Props to anyone who sets up a mini bowling alley. THAT would be badass. I encourage everyone to try something like this- it's lots of fun and the kids love it! (So do some of the adults!!!)

What is the victory condition for the Dark Ages variant?
The "special territories" section of the variant specifies that 19 centers are required for victory as a simple majority (18.5 rounds to 19), while the variant parameters states that 20 are needed. I saw a game drawn with one player owning 19, so this leads me to think that the latter is correct. Is this some kind of error, or did the creator decide on making it 20 instead while forgetting to change the special rules/information?
