Necromancer: a Lord of the Rings variant
This is a pretty interesting variant, where many of the factions have special powers. Anybody interested in playing? We have two players and a GM, need 6 more.

Stepping down as a Moderator
Hi all,
Captainmeme (1400 D Mod (B))

In recent months, my enthusiasm for both the game of Diplomacy and moderation has been dropping. This, combined with some recent events out of my control that caused me to drop my last game, has led me to make the decision to step down from moderating. I'm also going to be leaving the site for a while.

It's been great working with the mod team, old and new, and I'd like to thank them all for their continued efforts to make the site a better place. I'm certain they will continue just as well without me :)

It's also been great playing Diplomacy with everyone - although I practically never managed a solo, I still somehow managed to rise to the status of a respected player and got to play with the best of the best in some great games. Thanks for this - I consider it an honour to have played with and against you all.

Maybe I'll return at some point, but not for a while, I think.

CaptainMeme out :)

Cap'n,

Many thanks for some good games and others I'm still waiting for rematches. Hope everything is well for you and you will definitely be missed. Remember that you always have friends here, and don't hide your face too long!

Hope to see you back sooner rather than later.

O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done,
The ship has weather’d every rack, the prize we sought is won,
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;

But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up—for you the flag is flung—for you the bugle trills,
For you bouquets and ribbon’d wreaths—for you the shores a-crowding,
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;

Here Captain! dear father!
This arm beneath your head!
It is some dream that on the deck,
You’ve fallen cold and dead.

My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still,
My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will,
The ship is anchor’d safe and sound, its voyage closed and done,
From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won;

Exult O shores, and ring O bells!
But I with mournful tread,
Walk the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.
Thanks for everything captain, u will be missed :(

Thank you for your service to our community, Captain. Thank you also for recognizing the time to step aside as you address whatever matters that take you from us. Diplomacy is a hobby that can lead to burn out, and time away from it is occasionally a good thing. It might have been easier to sit back and hold the power while doing little. Your excellent leadership is evident in this decision to step aside. Hopefully some day you will return to gaming and/or moderating.

Your presence will be missed. You made VDip a better place to play through your diligence, discretion, and integrity. Furthermore your tenure as a moderator should become the standard by which all present and future moderators are held to.

been there, done that.
A break is quite often a real good idea! Take the time, then wait just a bit longer. After that you may find your batteries recharged and ready to go. I never got to know you but can appreciate what you had done, good luck to you! (and recharge those "Diplocell" batteries quickly)

I want to play a game
There are lots here whom I've enjoyed playing with (and hopefully vice versa). Anyone - old or new - up for a game? I don't have any preferences except WTA and 36 hr phases.

Scottish Independence - An historic act of bravery or madness?
So this time tomorrow we may have a new (old) country on that funny little island that sits of the coast of Europe. I'm interested to hear from people about what they think about this, and as it is yet to happen, what way you think they might vote...

The Lost Art of Reading Orders (feature request)
Because you need to click on a link to see the orders, I feel like players on this and other sites are not paying as close attention to the orders being issued. I know they're being shown graphically, but that can be ambiguous or hard to notice; reading the orders makes you notice things you might not have, like why something is failing or what another country is trying to do, or tell you (for gunboat games).

I'd suggest placing the latest set of orders just below the map.

A discussion of the merits and balance of the various two player scenarios...
Also, an offer to try any of them so long as they are unrated. I don't mind a loss and consider it a challenge to hang in as long as possible in the somewhat unbalanced. Although never again will I play Russia v Germany.

Do you think that a high level of co-operation [support orders for hold/attack] between 2 players is just coincidence or is there some means of collusion?

I came up with this idea to help Oli with the webdip exodus as well as just in general. How would you all feel about a independant forum (like a proboards style) for online diplomacy players?
