27 Feb 17 UTC | Spring, 1885: Good luck, have fun! |
28 Feb 17 UTC | Spring, 1885: Good luck. I'm not so sad in the colonies department. |
28 Feb 17 UTC | Spring, 1885: Good luck to all...I like my colonies, it's my homeland that's kind of small... |
28 Feb 17 UTC | Spring, 1885: In terms of colonies, it's actually Austria, China, Japan, and Turkey that don't start with any (counting a colony as something separated from the other provinces). |
28 Feb 17 UTC | Spring, 1885: So can you share? |
28 Feb 17 UTC | Spring, 1885: Oh Italy, my old homeland! And ... Eritrea, my old colony! |
28 Feb 17 UTC | Spring, 1885: To whom it may concern: AUSTRIA is not so much sad at not having colonies as happy that the Emperor of Germany seeks only to expand its so-called rightful territory [singular] in the Adriatic, Balkan, Eurasian & African spheres. To those foreign ministries not agreeing with this we refer you to our young writer Musil and his magnum opus on our "Kakania," a roman a clef - including the up and coming statesman, Rathenau. |
28 Feb 17 UTC | Spring, 1885: Musil's book title translates The Man Without Qualities Rathenau was assassinated during the Weimar republic Musil's family sat around in poverty in Switzerland and he wrote on |
01 Mar 17 UTC | Spring, 1885: Wasn't it Austria that wanted to expand into the Adriatic & Balkan? |
01 Mar 17 UTC | Spring, 1885: Just a question, what are you guys talking about? ;) |
01 Mar 17 UTC | Spring, 1885: Life & Stuff |
01 Mar 17 UTC | Spring, 1885: Austria is gracing us with a winsome display of arcane knowledge. I rushed right out to order a copy of The Man Without Qualities off of Amazon. Waiting on tenterhooks for the delivery..... |
01 Mar 17 UTC | Spring, 1885: Interestingly, my ancestors on my mother's side left Switzerland for America about the time Musil was living in poverty among the towering alps. The Burkholders settled in Ohio among the Mennonites of the Bluffton area, and my grandfather grew up speaking Swiss-German at home. My father, on the other hand, was of Scottish extraction and grew up as a rather generic protestant before converting to the Mennonite faith in college when he was drawn to their theology of non-violence. Menno Simons, eponymous founder of the sect, was Dutch, however, not Swiss, so it seems rather a sort of home-coming for me to play Holland in this game. |
01 Mar 17 UTC | Spring, 1885: I find it interesting that the books name is "Man without qualities". The German title writes "Man without Attributes/ Mann ohne Eigenschaften" if I'd translate it. |
01 Mar 17 UTC | Spring, 1885: You're quibbling a bit there, aren't you? Aren't qualities and attributes rather synonymous? But correct me if I'm wrong, we're in learning mode here! |
01 Mar 17 UTC | Spring, 1885: In English maybe. In German "Qualitäten" are attributes of a positive kind, while "Eigenschaften" is neutral. A man without attributes, is nothing. A no person, Nodody, an anti person or however you would describe it... A man without qualities I'd understand as somebody with only negative attributes |
01 Mar 17 UTC | Autumn, 1885: Well said. I appreciate the distinction in German and it makes sense to translate it in that way. |
02 Mar 17 UTC | Autumn, 1885: This is not relevant to the current game, but there is a WWIV game that's almost ready to play. It just needs two more players to start, so if you are looking for a match even longer than this one, join now! I will warn you, the public press suggests that some of the players are less experienced and definitely less mature, but that is unavoidable when you need 36 players to fill a game. 02 Mar 17 UTC | Autumn, 1885: Not much in this discussion HAS been relevant :-) |
02 Mar 17 UTC | Autumn, 1885: If you think pink is hard to read, you should try reading Oceania's lime green in WW4. |
