Which era most deserves a variant that doesn't yet have one here?
Self-explanatory title. Personally, I think a "Colonization of North America" map might be interesting, with colonial England, France, Spain, Portugal, along with Native American empires and powers, like the Aztecs, Incans, Narragansetts, Pequots, &c. So far as I know, there's nothing like that up yet. What else would you like to see? Maybe we'll get some good ideas.

I've always thought a city might make for a good battlefield. Or maybe a college campus, even. Zoom in very deeply, and individual buildings and roads are territories. If there aren't a lot of rivers and lakes, maybe split units into infantry and tanks. Tanks can't enter buildings, but infantry all has agoraphobia, so they stick to the buildings, and only cross the roads when a tank helps them across. Or something.

Hmmm... The city thing sounds fun...
I'd say infantry could enter streets but they are very weak there, though...
Like tanks being 3, 5 times as strong, so infantry could be a tie-breaker but not much more when it's a battle with tanks...
The houses would be good SCs, and I guess some SCs in corners that are not houses so tanks can be built...

Sounds great to me!

You could actually have fleets and armies in a city - just take Amsterdam or Venice or similar cities.
steephie22 (933 D)
20 Jan 13 UTC
Uhm...
Tinker, how exactly do you think Amsterdam is?
It's just a city next to a sea, nothing like Venice...

Venice is a great idea for fleets and armies though...

However, infantry and tanks could be fun too...

Don't know :P

Amsterdam may not be quite as boat-friendly as Venice, but it's not like it's Miami :p It has a very intricate system of canals that run through most of it.

I'd also like to say that I really, really like this micro diplomacy idea. Cities or buildings are a great idea! Props to Mertvaya

I heard a long time ago about a variant done for Oxford University that involved pedestrians and bikes...with the notion that bike lanes were too dangerous for pedestrians and thus needed bike help (a la convoying) to cross them. The SCs were houses within the various colleges. I'm sure if someone were to dig through the archives of the DipPouch they might find something about it there.
Tinker (1204 D)

Amsterdam isn't exactly next to sea anymore, but it has canals through the old (and interesting) centre that spiral outward, giving possibilities for fleeting.

I really like that Oxford idea, too.

I would love to see a version for the wars of the Roses... Not just Lancaster v York but the powerful noble houses fighting for supremacy, Nevilles, vs De Veres vs Plantaganet, Beaufort etc. This would be different in that the nobles had strengths in different parts. For instance, the De Mowbrays had strongholds in Norfolk, Yorkshire and North wales and the Nevilles in Yorkshire, South Wales and the midlands...

Spanish American War. U.S starts with a large navy but a small army. Cuba starts with a small army. Spain has large army and moderate navy.
I think it would be fun.

New Orleans during katrina. Bloods, crips, national guard, charlie sheen ...its also boat friendly...youre welcome

Well obviously I'm biased, but I think Cornell might make for a good minimap. http://mappery.com/maps/Cornell-University-Map.jpg Not very many roads, so things wouldn't get completely confusing for tanks, and lots of buildings for SCs. Plus the gorges would give you some good chokepoints between North Campus, Central Campus, and Collegetown.

I think it would be great if somebody could map and program the very nice 10-player "Ambition & Empire" variant developed by Jeffrey Kase and B.M. Powell. It starts up at the end of the Seven Year's War (1756-63). It is a well-researched and thought-out variant that cries out for inclusion in this web site. Check out http://www.diplom.org/Zine/F2008M/AnE/AErules.htm.

I'd like to see a variant about the Crusades, involving the European powers, the Arabs, maybe Byzantium, set in the Holy Land. Possibly without weird rules, only with victory condition 50%+1, Jerusalem.

Having Jerusalem as a victory condition would make a stalemate line too easy, I feel. I mean, how is, for example, Denmark going to get there?
Decima Legio (1987 D)
01 Feb 13 UTC
Because of this I said "set in the Holy Land".
I wouldn't ask for another classic map expanded towards east; there's a plenty of them.
I'd like to see a map of the Holy Land with Jerusalem in the middle, having the European factions starting not from their motherland, but from their coastal strongholds
Mertvaya Ruka (1468 D)

Ahhh, okay, that makes more sense.
RUFFHAUS 8 (2490 D)

Great idea, Decima. I particularly like the idea of using Jerusalem in the victory conditions, but it becomes to complicated to design a map that makes this a playable feature, perhaps Jerusalem could be weighted to count as multiple supply centers.

variantID=43 already uses the 'certain SCs needed for victory' rule. With Oli's help, it shouldn't be too hard to transfer it to another variant.

Crowded Game interest
Hey guys, just looking around to see if there is any interest in a crowded variant game? I want it to be a tactical nightmare so it will be gunboat. But I would prefer it to be a fairly classy match. Since I can't claim to have the best RR in the world, I'd prefer you to at least match my RR. PM any interest. The game will be password protected.

Variant Possibility Question
I'm unfamiliar with coding, but I had a question. Would it be possible to have a variant with an "elective SC?" That is, a number of players vote on which power gains control of an unconquerable SC that can't be built in? Ideally, the list of electors would be limited and there'd be a way to determine how many votes they get, but right now, I'm curious about the general case. Thanks!

WWIV description
recently playing some WWIV games i noticed that the variant description is not sufficient, as it does not tell anything abou IST, PAN, and EGY and also doesnt tell you that fllet cant move into territories that are bordered by this arctic territory, eg YUK and SRG...it is not optimal that you have to send units to these territories to find out what the rules there are...and asking in the public chat might give away plans...

England got a bum deal in the first attempt of 1066. This should now be better balanced with a new SC in Norfolk (formerly East Anglia on the board) & a new sea territory, Central North Sea. Enjoy!

Best Empire in History?
This ought to hopefully provoke some lively discussion here. Which empire, do you feel, was the best in human history? I personally like the Mongol Empire the best, especially under the first few khans. It just seems like a very progressive system in a lot of ways. There were a lot of crap things, too, but every empire has such things. I feel they were able to take the best from a lot of systems and synthesize a new whole, and that's pretty rare in history.
